Position Overview:

The Biological Research Associate – Facility Management plays a crucial role in delivering guidance, oversight, and technical assistance for shared laboratories and equipment utilized in the examination and creation of biological specimens. This position encompasses the administration of both staffed and unstaffed facilities, advising on experimental design and execution, formulating operational protocols, and overseeing health and safety measures related to equipment utilization.

Key Responsibilities:

Research Support

  • Provide expert advice on the formulation and implementation of studies using shared laboratory equipment.
  • Create and uphold standard operating procedures for core facility apparatus.
  • Assist scientists with experimental planning, encompassing overarching strategies and specific methodologies.

Facility Leadership and Administration

  • Manage the development and functioning of the Bioanalysis and Biofabrication core facility, which merges biomolecular and cellular assessments with bioprinting and microfluidic techniques to bolster bioengineering research.
  • Ensure that the facilities cater to the requirements of both internal and external users.
  • Collaborate closely with leadership, faculty advisory committees, and users to devise long-term business strategies for sustaining the shared facilities.
  • Work in partnership with campus facilities personnel on installation and infrastructure initiatives.

User Base Development

  • Establish and maintain a robust internal and external user community.
  • Encourage collaborative relationships with a diverse array of stakeholders, including faculty, researchers, administrators, and external collaborators.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in shared research or equipment facilities with an emphasis on biological specimens and experiments.
  • Five years of experience with bioanalytical methods, 3D bioprinting technologies, cell culture and analysis, rheological assessments, and microscopy.
  • Experience in project management, supervision of staff and/or students, and financial/budget oversight in a scientific or technical environment.

Professional Competencies:

  • Understanding of research laboratory safety regulations and facility infrastructure, operations, and maintenance.
  • Progressive management experience in a related technical setting.
  • Financial management and business development experience in a shared core facility context.
  • Experience aiding researchers with experimental design and scientific methodologies, including both high-level strategies and specific techniques.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and negotiation abilities.
  • Proficiency with software and technology, including hands-on operation of core facility tools.
  • Capability to manage competing interests from multiple stakeholders in a dynamic R&D environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience managing or providing technical leadership in a comparable research facility.
  • Advanced degree in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, materials science engineering, materials science, physics, biophysics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with the installation and upkeep of major research apparatus.
  • Experience with biomaterials assessment, chemical synthesis of bioinks, co-culture of human cells, immunohistological staining, cryosectioning, and imaging of 3D constructs.
  • Project management and/or financial skills, including budget oversight in a technical setting.
  • Experience implementing and managing complex safety regulations and protocols.
  • Familiarity with financial and administrative policies, rules, and procedures.
