Position Responsibilities
Safety Compliance Specialist II
Manages or assists in managing the district's safety initiatives in alignment with the Occupational Safety Division Manual. Promotes a proactive approach to accident prevention and safety protocols. Employees at this level work independently on tasks, although any unusual matters are escalated to the supervisor.
Safety Compliance Specialist III & IV
Leads the district's safety initiatives in accordance with the Occupational Safety Division Manual. Encourages a proactive approach to accident prevention and safety protocols. Employees at this level develop their own work plans and priorities to achieve established goals. Issues are seldom referred to the supervisor and are addressed as they arise.
Safety Compliance Specialist V
Directs the district's safety initiatives in accordance with the Occupational Safety Division Manual. Encourages a proactive approach to accident prevention and safety protocols. Employees at this level create their own work plans and priorities to meet established objectives. Issues are seldom referred to the supervisor and are managed as they occur.

Key Duties:
Safety Compliance Specialist II
  • Administers the orientation program for new drivers and oversees the vehicle safety program.
  • Coordinates and schedules employee safety recognition events and the annual Safety Awards Banquet/Truck Roadeo.
  • Monitors adherence to material safety data sheet (MSDS) requirements and recommends updates for the Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) plan.
  • Facilitates safety meetings, which typically involves planning, conducting, coordinating schedules, and providing educational materials.
  • Performs additional job responsibilities as assigned.
Safety Compliance Specialist III
  • Includes all responsibilities listed above and:
  • Plans, schedules, and conducts training on safety topics, including defensive driving, CPR, first aid, fleet safety, and hazardous materials; maintains training documentation.
  • Performs additional job responsibilities as assigned.
Safety Compliance Specialist IV & V
  • Includes all responsibilities listed above and:
  • Manages the hazardous substance spill contingency plan, emergency planning program, and violence prevention program.
  • Inspects equipment and work environments.
  • Plans, schedules, and oversees programs or activities that promote employee safety and accident prevention.
  • Performs additional job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Administration, or a related field. Relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree on a year-for-year basis.
Experience:
Safety Compliance Specialist II:
  • 1 YEAR in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or related safety work.

Safety Compliance Specialist III:
  • 2 YEARS in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or related safety work.

Safety Compliance Specialist IV:
  • 3 YEARS in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or related safety work.

Safety Compliance Specialist V:
  • 4 YEARS in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or related safety work.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license required for driving a state vehicle.
Competencies:
Safety Compliance Specialist II:
  • Knowledge of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and codes.
  • Understanding of hazardous materials management methods and procedures.
  • Ability to develop, interpret, and implement policies and procedures.
  • Effective communication skills for presenting ideas clearly and engagingly.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Proficient in using audio-visual equipment.
  • Experience in training in various environments.
Safety Compliance Specialist III:
  • Includes all competencies listed above and:
  • Public relations skills for maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborative skills to work effectively with others to achieve organizational goals.
Safety Compliance Specialist IV:
  • Includes all competencies listed above and:
  • Knowledge of investigative practices and procedures.
  • Experience in planning and coordinating workshops and seminars.
Safety Compliance Specialist V:
  • Includes all competencies listed above and:
  • Ability to instruct others and develop presentations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Sedentary Work:
Ability to lift up to 10 lbs and occasionally carry files or small tools.
Light Work:
Ability to lift up to 20 lbs and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs. Prolonged standing and repetitive motion may be required.
Conditions of Employment:
This position is physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical examination. Candidates must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety-sensitive positions. This role is subject to random drug testing.
