Position Overview

This role may be filled at either the Health Physicist Level 2 or Level 3, contingent upon the qualifications of the chosen candidate. Responsibilities will be expanded if the candidate is appointed at the higher level.

The selected individual will be part of the Radiation Instrument and Calibration (RIC) Team within the Radiation Protection Service Group (RP-SVS) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This position focuses on providing expert technical guidance and support related to radiation protection instrumentation, ensuring optimal customer service, troubleshooting, and collaboration with manufacturers to enhance instrumentation.

Health Physicist Level 2: Salary Range - $101,700 to $168,200

Key responsibilities include supporting the testing, evaluation, maintenance, and calibration of both fixed and portable radiation protection instruments for alpha, beta, photon, neutron, and tritium detection. The candidate will assist in routine and specialized operations at the Central Health Physics Calibration Facility, focusing on x-ray, gamma, and neutron instruments. Additional duties involve performing specialized calibrations with various radiation sources and evaluating existing and proposed instrumentation. Participation in the development and implementation of innovative methods to enhance radiation protection practices is also expected.

Health Physicist Level 3: Salary Range - $112,000 to $186,700

In addition to the responsibilities outlined for Level 2, the Level 3 Health Physicist will oversee the development and review of technical calibration procedures and related documentation. This role includes the management of the RIC Team's Quality Assurance Program and the creation of technical basis documents regarding radiation protection instrument capabilities. The individual will be tasked with resolving complex issues that necessitate creative problem-solving and thorough analysis of various factors.

Qualifications Required

Minimum Requirements:

  • Proven knowledge of health physics principles and practices, including radiation detection methodologies.
  • Familiarity with 10CFR835 and ANSI standards concerning radiation monitoring instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated experience in solving complex problems utilizing applied engineering and scientific principles.
  • Ability to independently determine project objectives and approaches for successful completion.
  • Working knowledge of radiation worker principles and practices, with experience in evaluating alternatives and developing experimental or design plans.
  • Capability to work autonomously and collaboratively with minimal supervision.

Additional Requirements for Health Physicist Level 3:

  • Advanced experience in creating technical documents, calibration procedures, and Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Expertise in resolving intricate problems requiring innovative solutions and comprehensive data analysis.
  • Experience in developing technical basis and performance documents related to radiation protection instruments.
  • Preferred certification by the American Board of Health Physics.

Education and Experience:

For Level 2: A Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or Physical Science with 5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master's degree is preferred.

For Level 3: A Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or Physical Science with 8 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Postgraduate coursework and professional certification are highly desirable.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in the calibration, testing, selection, and utilization of radiation monitoring instruments.
  • Proficiency in analog and digital electronic troubleshooting and repair.
  • Ability to develop and assess the performance of new radiation detection instruments.
  • Experience handling and utilizing various radioactive sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to create, modify, and adhere to technical procedures.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with personal computing systems.
  • Commitment to safety, security, quality, and customer service.
  • Familiarity with the Los Alamos Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) radiation transport code.
  • Knowledge of ANSI environmental testing protocols for radiation monitoring instruments.

Work Schedule: The RIC Team operates on-site with flexible work schedules to accommodate both team and individual needs.
