Salary Range:
Radiation Protection Specialist 1: $92,300 - $151,100
Radiation Protection Specialist 2: $101,700 - $168,200

Key Responsibilities:

This role encompasses responsibilities for a Radiation Protection Specialist 1/2 within the Technical and Regulatory Programs (TARP) Team in the Radiation Protection Programs Group (RP-PROG).

The successful candidate will:
  • Assist in representing the RP-PROG Procedures team during the formulation, modification, and execution of Radiation Protection protocols, policies, and technical documentation within the Radiation Protection Division;
  • Guarantee the integration of radiation safety principles into policies and procedures to safeguard employees, the community, and the environment;
  • Offer radiological technical assistance to field Health Physics staff and other LANL stakeholders;
  • Independently evaluate risks and vulnerabilities within the Radiation Protection Program and propose effective solutions;
  • Conduct and support RP evaluations and audits;
  • Collaborate with the RP Software and Applications lead in the development, management, and user support of the RP-PROG software suite.
Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Experience in procedural formulation, including policy documentation and radiation protection instrumentation;
  • Understanding of health physics principles and their practical application;
  • Experience in research, exploring alternative solutions, and advising on issues impacting radiological safety;
  • Ability to articulate and convey fundamental aspects of radiological safety to both technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities;
  • Familiarity with legal standards and regulations pertaining to radiological safety.
Education/Experience:

For lower level: Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, and 2 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

For higher level: Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, and 5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF software;
  • Experience in database and/or software application development;
  • Knowledge of Health Physics in plutonium and accelerator facilities;
  • Master's Degree in Health Physics, Radiation Protection, or a related field;
  • ABHP certification or progress towards it;
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance.
Essential Functions:
Reading vision; Ability to speak; Ability to hear within a normal range (500 to 3000 Hz).

Work Environment: Use of protective gear, including safety glasses and radiological anti-contamination clothing.
