Position Overview: The Vice President of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) will report directly to the Senior Vice President of Operations. This role is pivotal in fostering EHS risk management within the fast-paced environment of warehousing and transportation. The EHS VP will be responsible for proactively identifying EHS challenges, ensuring the application of risk management protocols, mentoring regional teams, analyzing incident data, and formulating actionable strategies. The ideal candidate will serve as an EHS champion for the organization, effectively engaging, inspiring, and aligning the division with local EHS objectives while contributing to the formulation, recommendation, and execution of sector-wide EHS policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of direct reports within the EHS field organization to implement the Global EHS Management System across North America.
- Oversee the deployment of program elements/tools to guarantee compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local OSHA/EPA/DOT regulations and company standards.
- Provide expert technical and regulatory guidance in establishing EHS continuous improvement initiatives and addressing follow-up actions related to EHS incidents, agency inspections, and audits.
- Contribute to the development of strategic EHS annual operating plans, evaluate field location performance against EHS objectives, and recommend necessary adjustments to achieve targets.
- Conduct regular site visits and EHS activities, including training, auditing, and assessments, to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal EHS protocols.
- Implement projects related to the overall EHS strategy, understand key performance indicators, benchmark across locations, and collaborate with leadership to mitigate EHS risks.
- Conduct risk assessments and assist in implementing effective control measures, ensuring the efficacy of existing safety protocols.
- Identify unsafe practices and conditions, demonstrating knowledge of appropriate corrective actions in a collaborative manner.
- Participate in the development of leading and lagging Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to promote best-in-class EHS performance and drive a cultural shift towards enhanced EHS practices.
- Analyze EHS data to formulate prevention strategies addressing process or risk gaps, ensuring that EHS performance plans are timely and achievable.
- Facilitate coordination and communication with internal EHS teams and other business units to drive continuous improvement in EHS standards.
- Evaluate data trends and EHS performance to prioritize actions that enhance organizational safety.
- Coach leaders at all levels on EHS objectives and the importance of a robust EHS culture in achieving business productivity.
- Identify issues and guide field locations in developing corrective action plans to address root causes and management system weaknesses using recognized analysis techniques.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Environmental Science, Safety, or a related field is preferred.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in a warehousing, distribution, or fleet environment as a Senior EHS professional.
- Extensive knowledge and experience with EHS Management systems and their implementation.
- Proven ability to manage multi-state EHS regulations, programs, and personnel.
- Strong understanding of EHS requirements and regulations.
- Postgraduate EHS qualifications are desirable.
- Certifications such as CSP, CIH, CHMM, and/or PE are preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, and develop high-performance teams.
- Capacity to manage multiple priorities and meet critical deadlines.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% based on business needs.
Compensation:
- Base salary range: $120,000 - $180,000
