Key Responsibilities
- Act as a Mechanical Engineer (Instructor) providing expertise in aviation technical subjects.
- Serve as the primary advisor to the Commanding Officer, offering engineering insights and instructional guidance.
- Instruct courses on aviation structures, managing the technical curriculum at the School of Aviation Safety.
- Oversee and supervise assigned personnel effectively.
- Develop and deliver aviation structures courses, including creating and updating curricula, lesson plans, assessments, and grading standards.
- Engage with instructional staff in classroom activities, labs, and feedback processes.
- Provide backup instruction for Aerodynamics and Investigations lecture series.
- Consult with mishap investigators on technical and engineering issues related to aerodynamics and aviation structures.
- Present briefs and academic papers at relevant meetings and seminars focused on aviation safety and mishap investigations.
- Represent the organization with professionalism and integrity.
- Manage the crash lab facilities and serve as a resource for Parts and Crash Laboratories.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be deemed suitable for federal employment.
- Participation in the direct deposit pay program is mandatory.

- Retired military members must comply with specific provisions regarding civilian employment.
- Males born after a certain date must be registered for Selective Service.
- Must obtain and maintain a secret level security clearance prior to starting the position.
- May require a valid state-issued driver's license.
- Travel may be necessary.
- Ability to stand for extended periods while delivering lectures is required.
- Outdoor lecturing at the crash lab may be necessary.
Basic Requirement: To qualify for a GS-0830 position, candidates must meet specific educational criteria as outlined in the job announcement.
In addition to the Basic Requirement, candidates must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector, including:
1) Serving as an instructor in aviation structures with advanced knowledge of aeronautical engineering principles.
2) Teaching and preparing educational materials, evaluating student performance, and contributing to academic curricula.
3) Developing and revising course materials and assessments for aviation structures.
4) Collaborating with instructional teams in classroom and laboratory settings.
5) Managing and supervising technical personnel.
Education
Basic Requirement: Successful completion of a professional engineering degree from an accredited institution is required.
OR
Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) is acceptable.
OR
Completion of at least 60 semester hours in relevant engineering courses, including specified areas of engineering science or physics.
OR
Completion of a bachelor's degree in a scientific field with at least one year of professional engineering experience under supervision.
