Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a Mechanical Engineer (Instructor) within the Aviation Safety Training Department.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to the Commanding Officer, providing engineering expertise and instructional support in aviation-related technical subjects.
  • Deliver instruction on aviation structures, overseeing and managing the technical curriculum for the School of Aviation Safety.
  • Fulfill comprehensive supervisory responsibilities for assigned personnel.
  • Conduct courses on aviation structures and develop/update educational materials, including curricula, lesson plans, assessments, and grading standards.
  • Engage with instructional staff in classroom activities, practical labs, and feedback processes.
  • Provide backup instruction for Aerodynamics and Investigations lecture series.
  • Consult with mishap investigators on technical and engineering issues related to aerodynamics and aviation structures.
  • Participate in meetings and seminars, presenting briefs and academic papers on aviation safety and mishap investigations.
  • Represent the organization with professionalism and credibility.
  • Oversee the crash lab as the building manager, serving as a resource for Parts and Crash Laboratories.
Requirements

  • Travel may be required.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods while delivering lectures.
  • Outdoor lectures at the crash lab may be necessary.
Qualifications

Basic Requirement for GS-0830 positions:

Successful completion of a professional engineering degree is required. The program must lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in an accredited engineering school or include advanced coursework in key engineering disciplines.

To qualify, candidates must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the federal service or comparable experience in the private sector, showcasing mastery of advanced mechanical aerospace or structural engineering concepts.

Examples of specialized experience include:

1) Serving as an instructor in aviation structures, demonstrating advanced knowledge of aeronautical engineering principles.
2) Preparing and delivering presentations, evaluating student performance, and contributing to academic curricula.
3) Developing educational materials and participating in classroom and laboratory activities.
4) Providing management and supervision of technical personnel.

Education

Education must be accredited by a recognized institution to be credited towards qualifications.
