The primary function of this role is to manage the processing and preparation of surgical instruments across various specialties, ensuring the provision of high-quality sterile trays, surgical tools, packs, and medical supplies. This position is crucial for maintaining the operational efficiency of a high-volume department that operates around the clock.
Role Responsibilities
This position plays an essential role within the Surgical Services Department and other clinical areas, as the functionality of these departments relies heavily on the instruments and equipment prepared by this team. Key responsibilities include:
- Cleaning and assembling surgical instruments.
- Executing sterilization procedures for supplies.
- Performing initial cleaning and decontamination of instruments and trays.
- Serving as a resource for operating room staff.
Challenges in this role include adapting to frequently changing instruments, equipment, and procedures, while ensuring that all processed items meet rigorous standards for sterility and readiness for surgical use. The technician also identifies and manages outside vendor instruments and assists vendors in maintaining their equipment.
Work Environment
Working conditions may involve exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous gases, chemicals, and risks associated with sharp instruments. This role requires vigilance in monitoring the availability of instruments, implants, and supplies.
Professional Expectations
The technician must demonstrate a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to manage repetitive tasks effectively. Responsibilities include:
- Maintaining appropriate levels of instruments and supplies for processing.
- Ensuring accurate patient charges related to the Sterile Processing Department.
