Position Overview

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law, a respected nonpartisan law and policy organization dedicated to enhancing democratic systems and justice in the United States, is in search of a seasoned and adept Director of Human Resources (HR). This role will support the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) in managing the comprehensive HR strategy of the center. The Director will be instrumental in promoting HR operations, ensuring alignment with the institution's objectives, and nurturing a positive and inclusive workplace environment.

Key Responsibilities

Benefits Management

  • Oversee daily operations of the Human Resources Team, acting as the primary contact for all HRIS, payroll, and benefits requirements.
  • Collaborate with the CHRO to design, communicate, and implement competitive total rewards strategies, including compensation, benefits, and engagement programs that align with market trends and organizational goals.
  • Manage the annual benefits open enrollment process and the total compensation review.
  • Assist employees in making informed decisions regarding various benefit options.
  • Ensure accurate management of benefits contributions and payments, including audits and reconciliations.
  • Prepare and submit the benefits budget for CHRO approval, demonstrating creativity in maintaining cost-effective benefit plans.
  • Disseminate communications regarding benefits updates and enhancements.
  • Negotiate annual benefit plan renewals with insurance brokers.
  • Coordinate employee benefits events and programs.
  • Conduct benefits orientation for new hires and prepare necessary regulatory reports.
  • Propose and implement new administrative procedures to enhance the efficiency of the benefits function.

Stakeholder and Process Management

  • Manage employee leave plans and workers' compensation claims, ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
  • Work closely with insurance representatives to guarantee efficient service delivery.
  • Maintain organized records of benefits enrollment and retirement plans.
  • Keep the CHRO informed of regulatory changes affecting benefits.
  • Coordinate the filing of annual ERISA Forms for health and welfare plans.
  • Update and distribute Summary Annual Reports for employee benefit plans.
  • Maintain necessary insurance certificates for contractors.
  • Serve as the primary contact for insurance claims and related inquiries.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Supervise HR team members.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the CHRO.
  • Enhance employee engagement and retention through collaboration across the organization.
  • Provide guidance on HR policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Oversee payroll and manage HR-related projects.
  • Benchmark positions for appropriate grade and title alignment.
  • Access and update employee information as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Significant experience at the director level with relevant certifications.
  • Knowledge of ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, and current regulatory issues is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Capacity to exercise independent judgment in policy interpretation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HRIS systems.
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent mathematical abilities and multitasking skills.
