Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The role involves assisting in the preparation and distribution of meals and snacks to educational settings, adhering to the regulations set forth by the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and other relevant federal, state, and local guidelines. This position supports the Food Service Specialist in various kitchen and food service tasks and may require access to protected health information (PHI) or confidential identifiable information (CII) as necessary for job responsibilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Meal Preparation

  • Assist in the preparation of meals and snacks for the childcare facility under the guidance of the Food Service Specialist.

Food Distribution

  • Support the distribution of meals and snacks to various classrooms.
  • Assist classroom staff in implementing family-style meal service to ensure compliance with CACFP meal pattern requirements.
  • Help children serve themselves food in accordance with the family-style service approach.

Health and Safety Standards

  • Develop and maintain a cleaning schedule that meets local, state, and federal sanitation regulations.
  • Follow proper procedures for washing and sanitizing kitchen utensils and dishes.
  • Exhibit good personal hygiene and grooming practices.
  • Utilize proper hand-washing techniques consistently.
  • Maintain safe and sanitary conditions during food storage, preparation, and service.
  • Report any safety hazards to management promptly.
  • Regularly inspect refrigeration, freezer, and dry storage areas to ensure safe food storage.
  • Ensure food is maintained at appropriate temperatures throughout preparation and service.

Communication and Teamwork

  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and collaborate effectively with staff and management.
  • Contribute to creating a warm and engaging atmosphere for children.
  • Participate in job-related training and adhere to supervisor instructions regarding food preparation and service.
  • Promote food and nutrition education through positive interactions with staff, parents, and children.
  • Utilize problem-solving skills to maintain an efficient food production system.

Documentation

  • Assist the Food Service Specialist in maintaining accurate food production records and meal count sheets in compliance with regulations.

Performance Expectations

  • Meet performance standards for food preparation, menu planning, and nutrition education as outlined by Head Start and CACFP.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent educational attainment.
  • Experience working with diverse low-income families.
  • Proof of a physical examination (updated every three years), including a one-step Mantoux TB skin test prior to employment.
  • Completion of a criminal history background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of CACFP, USDA, and other relevant regulations.
  • Food Handler's Permit.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification.
