Position Overview

The Biological Science Technician (Aquatics) role encompasses various responsibilities focused on aquatic ecosystems and their management. This position is vital for ensuring the health and sustainability of wetland environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather and analyze aquatic ecology and hydrology data from diverse wetland environments, including springs and rivers, across multiple national park units.
  • Identify various amphibians and aquatic species through a combination of visual, auditory, and indirect field methods, including environmental DNA sampling and wildlife monitoring technologies.
  • Collect and document essential water quality and chemistry data to assess and understand wetland health, adhering strictly to established monitoring protocols.
  • Oversee the complete data management process, from initial preparation and field data collection to final reporting and equipment maintenance.
  • Lead and mentor a small team of 2-4 individuals, providing guidance in data collection, management practices, and safety procedures.
  • Coordinate logistical aspects of fieldwork, including work schedules, accommodations, and necessary equipment organization.

  • Successful candidates will undergo a background investigation.
  • Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is mandatory for male applicants.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is required.
  • Fieldwork may necessitate working evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Travel may be required, including overnight stays away from home.
  • Certification as a Wilderness First Responder is essential.
  • Physical capability to work and camp in rugged terrains and extreme weather conditions is required.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Relevant experience and education will be considered for the position.

Experience Requirements

  • To qualify at the GS-06 level, candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-05 level, including field studies in aquatic ecology and wetland assessments.
  • For the GS-07 level, candidates must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-06 level, focusing on monitoring aquatic systems and managing ecological restoration projects.
