Aquatic Ecology Research Technician

Overview
This position is open to individuals under various special authorities, including Former Public Land Corps (PLC) members and OPM Interchange Agreement participants.
Key Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the Biological Science Technician (Aquatics) role encompass the following:
- Gather data on aquatic ecosystems and hydrology from remote wetland areas across designated national park units. Identify amphibians and other aquatic species using visual, auditory, and indirect methods, including environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling and wildlife monitoring technology.
- Oversee data management throughout the entire process, from preparation before the field season to data collection and final reporting. Ensure the maintenance of equipment and electronic devices used for data collection and navigation.
- Supervise, train, and guide a team of 2-4 members in both office and field environments, providing leadership in data collection, management, and adherence to safety protocols.
- Organize logistical elements such as work schedules, accommodation arrangements, communication with park personnel, equipment organization, and basic vehicle upkeep.
Employment Conditions
- U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
- Appointment is contingent upon a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is required for male applicants.
- Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is necessary.
- Candidates currently holding or who have held a General Schedule position must meet time-in-grade requirements.
- Availability for on-call duties, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required.
- New employees or supervisors in the Federal government must complete a one-year probationary period.
- Travel may be necessary, including overnight stays away from home.
- A Wilderness First Responder certification is required.
- Ability to work and camp in challenging environments, including rugged mountainous and high-elevation areas, is essential.
- Implementation of established monitoring protocols and procedures is expected, with a focus on quality control of collected data.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Relevant experience will be credited accordingly.
Experience Requirements:
- For GS-06 level: One year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05, including field studies on aquatic ecology and monitoring wetland conditions.
- For GS-07 level: One year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06, including data collection on aquatic systems and providing guidance to field crews.
Education:
A combination of education and experience may also qualify candidates for this position.
Volunteer Experience:
Volunteer work will be considered in evaluating qualifications.
