Role Overview

Under the supervision of the Director of Education, the Autism Education Specialist is a year-round professional role that provides instructional leadership across various domains, including academic content, life skills, and vocational training, in alignment with ITEP goals and diploma criteria. The Specialist will collaborate closely with clinical staff to deliver a tailored, evidence-based educational experience that considers each student's interests, strengths, and needs. Additionally, the Specialist will supervise Educational Assistants and 1:1 aides, offering training and mentorship on instructional methodologies. Daily instruction will take place within the school premises, on school grounds, and within the community. The Specialist will maintain close communication with all staff levels across Clinical and Campus Life to create a uniquely enhanced educational experience. Each student's educational plan will be crafted to enrich their academic, daily living, and vocational skills through hands-on, student-driven activities that are goal-oriented and self-directed. The Specialist will also actively participate in various programs, events, and services, engaging in a broad spectrum of educational responsibilities. Essential Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Special Education or a related field
  • Current NY State Special Education teaching license (or equivalent) or eligibility to obtain one
  • In-depth knowledge of federal law (IDEA), state law, and national standards pertaining to special education
  • Proficiency in technology applications relevant to instructional resources and strategies
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational abilities
  • Capability to utilize Shrub Oak's technology systems
  • Flexibility and sound decision-making skills under pressure and changing circumstances
  • Experience working with middle and high school students with Autism and related disorders
  • Consistent and regular attendance is mandatory
Preferred Qualifications
  • Credentials in high school, middle, or adolescent special education
  • Expertise in a specific academic subject area
  • Familiarity with best practices in special education
  • Knowledge of educational and vocational assessment tools
  • Understanding of data collection and analysis for informed decision-making
  • Proficiency in a second language
Position Type/Expected Work Hours: Full-time staff members typically work a traditional 40-hour work week, with expected involvement in extracurricular school activities.
