Position Overview:
The Campus Safety Specialist is tasked with ensuring the safety and security of the university's community, including students, staff, visitors, and property during assigned shifts. This role involves addressing violations of law and campus policies in a fair manner while engaging positively with diverse individuals to promote an inclusive environment.
The Campus Safety Specialist reports to the Associate Director of Campus Safety and is responsible for responding to incidents following established policies and procedures. The role requires independence and the ability to supervise work-study students informally. Strong public relations skills are essential, as well as effective interpersonal and communication abilities to interact with various stakeholders within and outside the university.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safety and security of the university community during assigned shifts.
- Conduct patrols of university grounds and facilities to maintain a secure environment.
- Monitor activities and address any suspicious behavior on campus.
- Escort individuals off campus when necessary.
- Issue citations and warnings to those violating policies.
- Gather information and write reports on incidents involving crimes, vandalism, and other illegal activities.
- Respond promptly to calls for assistance and coordinate with local emergency services when needed.
- Provide basic first aid and CPR as required.
- Respond to security and fire alarms monitored by campus safety.
- Support the implementation of the University Strategic Plan.
- Adhere to university policies and procedures.
- Maintain daily activity logs and complete incident reports in a timely manner.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Must meet certification criteria by the Board on Public Safety Standards and Training, including being at least 21 years old, having a high school diploma or GED, and being free from felony convictions.
- At least two years of experience in a security role or relevant college coursework in law enforcement or criminal justice.
- Proficient in computer use, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and security-related software.
- Valid driver's license required within 60 days of hire.
- CPR/AED Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
- Ability to solve problems efficiently and manage projects independently.
- Capability to multitask accurately in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience working with diverse populations.
- Experience in customer service.
- Background in a security-related field.
- Experience in a college or university setting.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and navigate stairs as part of patrol duties.
- Capability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
