Position Summary

Under the supervision of a Public Safety Sergeant or higher authority, this role involves performing essential public safety duties aimed at safeguarding individuals and property within the college environment. Following established protocols, the officer will respond to and manage incidents involving crime, fire, or medical emergencies. Responsibilities include conducting foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols on a randomized schedule and enforcing relevant state and local regulations when necessary.

Essential qualifications, skills, and abilities:
Candidates will be assessed throughout the selection process based on their demonstration of the following qualifications:

- In-depth understanding of public safety and security, particularly within a higher education context in a non-sworn, unarmed capacity.

- A community-focused mindset that emphasizes the safety, security, health, and well-being of the diverse population at Portland Community College.

- Proven experience in delivering exceptional customer service, with the ability to engage effectively with varied communities and work collaboratively in team settings.

- Strong problem-solving capabilities, sound judgment, keen observational skills, and the ability to prepare accurate and timely reports.

- Reliability, credibility as a witness, proficient written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.

- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality regarding sensitive information.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate the following minimum qualifications:

- High school diploma or equivalent.

- Completion of two years of college-level coursework in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, or related fields (relevant experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis).

- Must be at least 21 years of age.

- Completion of a four-month Department Field Training and Evaluation Program within one year of appointment is required.

- Certification in Basic First Aid, Basic CPR, and Basic AED must be obtained within one year of appointment or be held upon hire.

- A current Private Security ID certification from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training in Oregon is required, or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.

- Completion of certification requirements for LEDS/NCIC upon hire.

- Successful completion of a personal and criminal history background investigation is mandatory.

- Must possess a valid driver's license for operating a motor vehicle in Oregon and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Starting Salary Expectations
The initial salary range is $58,180 to $59,923 annually, with potential for higher placement based on qualifications and experience.

PCC fully funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program.

Additionally, PCC offers a tuition waiver for employees, domestic partners, and dependent children under 24, along with partial tuition reimbursement for full-time employees at other accredited institutions.

Paid Leave:
- 8 hours of vacation leave per month (increases with service)
- 8 hours of sick leave per month
- 24 hours of additional personal leave days annually
- 11 paid holidays

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Must be able to work rotating shifts and overtime as required, including early/late hours. The role may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions and potentially stressful situations.

Physical requirements include the ability to stand for extended periods, walk, run, climb, bend, and lift weights as necessary to provide assistance.
