Alexandria, Virginia, United States National Trust for Historic Preservation Full time

SITE OVERVIEW

The Woodlawn plantation and Pope-Leighey House are situated in a serene area of Alexandria, Virginia, representing a significant historical narrative tied to the Doeg, Manahoac, Susquehannock, Patawomeck, and Piscataway peoples. This site, once part of George Washington's estate, evolved from a traditional plantation with enslaved labor into a pioneering, racially integrated agricultural community under Quaker stewardship prior to the Civil War. Established as a house museum in 1949 and acquired by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1954, it was the first site to open to the public. In 1964, the Pope-Leighey House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, was relocated to this property to avert its destruction. The expansive Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House site encompasses 126 acres, featuring 11 structures, a collection of furnishings and decorative arts, and an active farming initiative in collaboration with Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture.

The mission of Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House is to connect with the community to safeguard history and nurture nature at this historic site of enslavement. The various programs, events, and interpretive efforts aim to foster racial equity, promote sustainable practices, enhance community wellbeing, and contribute to societal healing.

JOB SUMMARY

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will deliver transformative leadership to Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House, a Stewardship Site managed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP). The new CEO will be responsible for realizing an inspiring vision for the site, which encompasses inclusive programming, community partnerships, and interpretations that reflect a comprehensive and truthful history, while continuing the site's evolution. The CEO will generate mission-aligned revenue opportunities to ensure the site's sustainability and enhance its value to the community. The CEO will make historic sites relevant today by embodying principles of equity, inclusion, justice, and diversity in all operational aspects.

The CEO will spearhead the enhancement of comprehensive and truthful interpretation and public programming at the site, particularly concerning the African American, Indigenous peoples, LGBTQ+, gender, plantation, and architectural histories associated with the site and the broader community. Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House will exemplify the Trust's strategic priority of "Telling the Full American Story" through on-site and virtual initiatives, educational tours, exhibitions, and partnerships at local, regional, and national levels.

The CEO's primary responsibilities will include overseeing site operations, managing staff, ensuring site maintenance and security, programming, revenue generation, budget management, marketing, and fundraising. The CEO will be accountable for securing funding from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government sources to support ongoing operations and expand the site's reserves for long-term sustainability. They will collaborate with a diverse and inclusive advisory council to achieve financial self-sufficiency and strengthen governance practices rooted in representational equity, in alignment with the National Trust's vision for its historic sites.

The CEO will cultivate ethical and equitable community partnerships and strategic institutional collaborations, which will inform programming at Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House. They will maintain a community presence and ensure that relevant programming and activities address local needs and drive the site's long-term viability, engaging with agricultural professionals, local educators, and conservation advocates. In particular, the CEO will work closely with descendant committees and other stakeholders to achieve these objectives and support program expansion developed by the Senior Manager of Programs.

The Chief Executive Officer will report to the Senior Vice President (SVP) for Historic Sites and will collaborate with NTHP headquarters staff, particularly those in the Historic Sites Department's technical support roles in collections, finance, interpretation, and architecture, as well as staff in legal, finance, public affairs, marketing, fundraising, and other divisions.
