Alexandria, Virginia, United States National Trust for Historic Preservation Full time

SITE OVERVIEW

The Woodlawn plantation and Pope-Leighey House are situated in a serene region of Alexandria, Virginia, on the ancestral lands of the Doeg, Manahoac, Susquehannock, Patawomeck, and Piscataway peoples, just a short drive from Washington, D.C. Originally part of George Washington's estate, Woodlawn evolved from a traditional plantation with enslaved labor into a pioneering, racially integrated agricultural community under Quaker stewardship long before the Civil War. Established as a house museum in 1949 and acquired by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1954, it became the first site accessible to the public. In 1964, the Pope-Leighey House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, was relocated to the property to save it from demolition. The expansive Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House site encompasses 126 acres, featuring 11 structures, a collection of furnishings and decorative arts, and an active farming initiative in collaboration with Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture.

The mission of Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House is to connect with the community to safeguard history and nurture nature at this historic site of enslavement. Our programs, events, and interpretations promote racial equity, sustainable practices, community well-being, and restorative justice.

JOB SUMMARY

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will provide transformative leadership to Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House, a Stewardship Site managed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP). The new CEO will be responsible for executing a visionary plan for the site that emphasizes inclusive programming, collaborative partnerships, and community involvement, while ensuring a comprehensive and honest portrayal of history. The CEO will also identify mission-driven revenue opportunities to ensure the site's sustainability and enhance its value to the community.

The CEO will spearhead the enhancement of inclusive narratives and public programming at the site, particularly focusing on the African American, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, gender, plantation, and architectural histories relevant to the site and its surrounding community. Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House will embody the Trust's strategic goal of "Telling the Full American Story" through a variety of on-site and virtual initiatives, educational tours, exhibitions, and collaborations with local, regional, and national partners.

Key responsibilities include overseeing site operations, managing staff, ensuring site maintenance and security, developing programming, generating revenue, balancing budgets, and leading marketing and fundraising efforts. The CEO will engage in fundraising activities across individual, corporate, foundation, and government sectors to support ongoing operations and expand the site's financial reserves for long-term sustainability. They will also work to cultivate a diverse and inclusive advisory council to enhance the site's financial independence and strengthen governance practices rooted in equity, in alignment with the National Trust's vision for its historic sites.

The CEO will foster ethical and equitable community partnerships and strategic institutional collaborations, which will inform programming at Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House. They will maintain a strong community presence and ensure that relevant programming directly addresses local needs, serving as a catalyst for the site's long-term viability, including engaging with agricultural experts, local educators, and conservation advocates. Collaboration with descendant committees and other stakeholders will be essential to achieve these objectives and support program expansion led by the Senior Manager of Programs.

The Chief Executive Officer will report to the Senior Vice President (SVP) for Historic Sites and collaborate with NTHP headquarters staff, particularly those in the Historic Sites Department's technical support roles in collections, finance, interpretation, and architecture, as well as staff in legal, finance, public affairs, marketing, and fundraising divisions.
