Position Overview

The Senior Agricultural Technician plays a vital role in advancing the crop physiology initiatives at the Commonwealth of Virginia's Agricultural Research & Extension Center. Under the guidance of the lead crop physiologist, the technician will be responsible for executing experimental protocols that encompass various agricultural practices including land preparation, planting, maintenance of experimental plots, harvesting, crop drying, and processing. This role also involves sample processing, data collection, and the electronic recording of data for both on-site and remote research activities. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement experimental protocols related to crop physiology.
  • Maintain and organize facilities and equipment associated with the program.
  • Provide field-based support and mentorship to part-time staff and graduate students.
  • Assist other programs during peak labor demands.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess prior experience in operating agricultural machinery such as tractors, planters, sprayers, and harvest combines. Proficiency in performing preventive maintenance on field and research equipment is essential. Experience in supporting research projects, along with strong communication skills, both written and verbal, is highly desired. Familiarity with data entry and software applications, particularly Microsoft Office, is required. A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are mandatory, along with the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License with a Class A endorsement and DOT medical certification within six months of employment. Additionally, candidates must secure a category 10 pesticide applicator's license within the same timeframe.

Preferred Qualifications

An associate degree in Agriculture, Biology, Horticulture, or a related field, or equivalent experience in production agriculture or agricultural research is preferred.

Compensation

Salary range is $38,000 - $48,000, commensurate with experience.
