Literacy Lead – Elementary School

Overview:

Real Options for City Kids (R.O.C.K.) is a distinguished nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting children and youth in underserved communities. Our team plays a crucial role in positively influencing the lives of young individuals every day. Our mission focuses on fostering the healthy growth of children by offering opportunities that may otherwise be inaccessible. R.O.C.K. supports over 900 children (ages 6-17) through a comprehensive framework aimed at developing essential social and emotional skills, promoting strong academic habits, and expanding their horizons.

Position Summary: The Literacy Lead will primarily engage with students and staff at a designated elementary school, while also collaborating with a team of literacy professionals from partner institutions for training and professional development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement literacy training frameworks for the literacy team.
  • Deliver high-quality professional development on effective literacy strategies and foundational reading skills.
  • Demonstrate and instruct innovative literacy intervention techniques.
  • Guide literacy staff in utilizing evidence-based assessments to identify appropriate interventions for students.
  • Analyze educational data, recognize trends, and assist educators in modifying instruction based on findings.
  • Communicate literacy progress with organizational and school leadership.
  • Oversee literacy partnerships, including organizing reading groups and monitoring student advancement.
  • Participate in all literacy meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Foster positive relationships with staff, students, educators, and families.
  • Serve as a role model and leader for both children and staff.
  • Assist in the organization of school-wide literacy events and workshops.
  • Engage in the analysis of student performance data and track academic progress.
  • Implement positive discipline strategies and restorative practices when interacting with students.
  • Create and maintain a safe and respectful educational environment.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and scheduled program events.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in specialized literacy curricula.
  • Understanding of child literacy development processes.
  • Demonstrated success in supporting struggling readers.
  • Commitment to working with underserved populations.
  • Reliable transportation for program-related travel.
  • Bilingual abilities in Spanish, Cantonese, or Samoan are advantageous.
  • Completion of 48 college credits from an accredited institution or successful passing of the Instructional Aide Exam.
  • Proof of a negative TB screening within the last four years.
  • Verification of COVID vaccinations and booster.
  • Successful candidates will undergo a background check following a conditional offer.
