Literacy Lead – Elementary School

Overview:

Real Options for City Kids (R.O.C.K.) is a distinguished nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering hope and opportunity for children and youth in underserved communities. Our team members play a crucial role in positively influencing the lives of young individuals every day. Our mission focuses on supporting the healthy growth of children by offering access to a variety of enriching programs. R.O.C.K. serves over 900 children aged 6-17, utilizing a framework that enhances social and emotional skills, promotes strong academic habits, and expands their horizons.

Position: Literacy Lead – Elementary School

Compensation: $28.00 – $30.00/hour based on experience

Work Schedule: Contract position with hours ranging from 8:00am-6:00pm, including health and retirement benefits, paid holidays, and consistent work during school breaks.

Location: El Dorado Elementary School (K-5 grade)

The Literacy Lead will primarily engage with students and staff at El Dorado Elementary School, while also collaborating with a team of literacy professionals from a partner school for training and development purposes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement literacy training frameworks for R.O.C.K. literacy staff.
  • Deliver high-quality professional development on effective literacy strategies and reading foundations.
  • Model and instruct innovative literacy intervention techniques.
  • Guide literacy staff in utilizing evidence-based assessments to identify necessary interventions for students.
  • Analyze educational data, identify trends, and assist educators in modifying instruction accordingly.
  • Communicate literacy progress with R.O.C.K. and school leadership.
  • Oversee literacy partnerships, including organizing reading groups and monitoring student advancement.
  • Participate in all literacy meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Build positive relationships with staff, students, teachers, and parents.
  • Serve as a leader and role model for children and staff.
  • Assist in organizing school-wide literacy events and workshops.
  • Engage in student performance data analysis and academic progress tracking.
  • Implement positive discipline and restorative practices when interacting with students.
  • Create and maintain a safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and scheduled program events.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in specialized literacy curricula.
  • Understanding of the reading acquisition process in children.
  • Demonstrated success in supporting struggling readers.
  • Commitment to working with underserved populations.
  • Reliable transportation for program-related activities.
  • Bilingual abilities in Spanish, Cantonese, or Samoan are advantageous.
  • Completion of 48 college credits from an accredited institution or passing the Instructional Aide Exam.
  • Proof of a negative TB screening within the last four years.
  • COVID-19 vaccination and booster required.
  • Background check required post conditional offer.
