Literacy Lead – Elementary School
Overview:
Real Options for City Kids (R.O.C.K.) is a recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering children and youth in underserved communities. Our mission focuses on fostering the healthy growth of children by offering access to a variety of enriching programs. At R.O.C.K., we support over 900 children (ages 6-17) through a framework that enhances social and emotional skills, cultivates strong academic habits, and expands their opportunities.
Position Summary: The Literacy Lead will primarily engage with students and staff at an elementary school, while also collaborating with a team of literacy professionals at partner institutions for training and development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and implement literacy training programs for a team of literacy staff.
- Deliver high-quality professional development focused on effective literacy strategies and reading foundations.
- Model and instruct innovative literacy intervention techniques.
- Guide literacy staff in utilizing evidence-based assessments to tailor interventions for students.
- Analyze educational data to identify trends and assist educators in modifying instruction accordingly.
- Communicate literacy progress with organizational and school leadership.
- Oversee literacy partnerships, including organizing reading groups and monitoring student advancement.
- Participate in all literacy-related meetings and professional development sessions.
- Build positive relationships with students, staff, teachers, and families.
- Serve as a mentor and role model for both children and staff.
- Assist in organizing school-wide literacy events and workshops.
- Engage in student performance data analysis and academic tracking.
- Implement positive discipline strategies and restorative practices in student interactions.
- Create and uphold a safe and respectful learning environment.
- Attend regular staff meetings and program events.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 3 years of experience with specialized literacy curricula.
- Understanding of the reading acquisition process in children.
- Demonstrated success in supporting struggling readers.
- Commitment to working with underserved populations.
- Reliable transportation for program-related travel.
- Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, or Samoan are advantageous.
- At least 48 college credits from an accredited institution or successful completion of the Instructional Aide Exam.
- Proof of a negative TB screening within the last four years.
- Verification of COVID vaccinations and booster.
- Background checks will be conducted post-offer, in compliance with local regulations.
