Literacy Lead – Elementary School

Overview:

Real Options for City Kids (R.O.C.K.) is a distinguished nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering hope and opportunity for children and youth in underserved communities. Our mission focuses on promoting the healthy growth of children by offering access to a variety of enriching programs. We positively impact the lives of over 900 children (ages 6-17) through a framework that enhances social and emotional skills, cultivates strong academic habits, and expands their horizons.

Position Summary: The Literacy Lead will primarily engage with students and staff at an elementary school, while also collaborating with a team of literacy professionals from a partner institution for training and development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement effective literacy training programs for a team of literacy staff.
  • Deliver high-quality professional development on best practices in literacy and foundational reading skills.
  • Model and instruct innovative literacy intervention strategies.
  • Coach staff on utilizing evidence-based assessments to tailor interventions for students.
  • Analyze student data to identify trends and support instructional adjustments.
  • Communicate progress in literacy initiatives to leadership teams.
  • Manage literacy partnerships, including organizing reading groups and monitoring student progress.
  • Participate in all literacy meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Serve as a role model and leader within the educational environment.
  • Assist in the planning of literacy-related events and workshops.
  • Engage in data analysis to track student performance and academic progress.
  • Implement positive discipline and restorative practices with students.
  • Create a safe and respectful learning atmosphere.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and program events.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in specialized literacy curricula.
  • Strong understanding of reading acquisition processes.
  • Demonstrated success in supporting struggling readers.
  • Commitment to working with underserved populations.
  • Reliable transportation for program-related travel.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, or Samoan are advantageous.
  • Completion of 48 college credits from an accredited institution or successful passing of the Instructional Aide Exam.
  • Proof of a negative TB screening within the last four years.
  • Verification of COVID vaccinations and booster.
  • Background check required post-offer, in compliance with local ordinances.
