Legal Information Specialist
POSITION: Full-Time Legal Information Specialist; InsideHigherEd; 37.5 hours/week, Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm; occasional travel required; MCCC/MTA Unit Professional Position; Pay Grade 5; Grant Funded Position

SUMMARY: This administrative role operates under the direct supervision of the Education Director, Corrections, and plays a vital part in the management and functionality of the Law Library within a correctional environment. The Legal Information Specialist will: (1) Ensure adherence to state regulations and constitutional mandates that uphold inmates' rights to legal resources; (2) Sustain the library by refreshing its contents, seeking evaluations from legal professionals regarding its sufficiency, and ensuring accessibility of information to all inmates, irrespective of classification; (3) Oversee all administrative and clerical functions of the Law Library; and (4) Provide administrative support by managing internal and external communications for the Library and advising program management personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Key responsibilities for this position include:
  • Developing and refining systems and procedures by assessing operational practices, recordkeeping systems, and implementing necessary modifications.
  • Providing information by addressing inquiries and requests.
  • Resolving administrative challenges by coordinating report preparation, analyzing data, and identifying solutions.
  • Maintaining essential records, reports, and documentation to support compliance with American Correctional Association (ACA) and state correctional standards.
  • Enhancing professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional literature, establishing networks, and engaging in professional organizations.
  • Safeguarding inmates' confidential legal documentation and electronic records.
  • Delivering general library services to the facility, encompassing both educational and recreational reading services.
  • Managing, organizing, and updating a constitutionally compliant law library.
  • Conducting annual assessments for legal materials and participating in the procurement process.
  • Formulating procedures in collaboration with security personnel to ensure all inmates have access to library information.
  • Overseeing the operation of a general use library, providing recreational and culturally relevant reading materials for all inmates.
  • Maintaining a reference unit that addresses the educational needs of the inmate population.
  • Collaborating with program staff, counselors, vocational instructors, and educators to ensure library support for existing and future inmate education programs.
  • Coordinating with library and program staff at other facilities and correctional departments. Performing additional job-related duties as assigned or required by senior administrators.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in Library Science or a closely related field; with three (3) years of experience and/or training that encompasses library operations, reference services, bibliographic instruction, circulation services, copy cataloging, and library information systems; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Proficiency in digital literacy.
  • Must be, or agrees to become, a Notary Public. Ability to communicate effectively with employees, inmates, and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in a correctional facility.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Experience working with and supporting a culturally diverse population.

BACKGROUND CHECK: Candidates will be required to pass a CORI and SORI check as a condition of employment.

GRADE AND SALARY: Anticipated salary range is competitive with a complete fringe benefit package, including health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, paid leave, educational benefits, and retirement benefits. Actual salary will be determined in accordance with the classification system. Official transcripts will be required at the time of hire.
