Position Overview
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is in search of dedicated Entry Level Nuclear Operations and Training Engineers.
The Nuclear Operations and Training Engineer plays a crucial role in training U.S. Naval personnel to become proficient nuclear plant operators and supervisors, utilizing advanced nuclear reactors and cutting-edge simulation technology.
This position serves as an accelerated leadership development opportunity within one of the most esteemed programs globally. It offers hands-on experience in nuclear plant operations while developing a comprehensive set of technical, operational, and leadership skills.
Individuals in this role will instruct U.S. Navy students on the fundamental principles of safe nuclear plant operations, preparing them for service on submarines and aircraft carriers.
This role is essential for ensuring that the nuclear fleet is staffed with the most highly trained and technically competent nuclear operators worldwide.
As part of this position, individuals will qualify as nuclear plant operators, supervisors, and instructors. The role requires rotating shift work.
Training and Responsibilities
The Nuclear Operations and Training Engineer will undergo technical training and plant qualifications efficiently. The initial qualification consists of a 16-month training program, where the first six months involve classroom instruction led by Navy Instructors at Naval Nuclear Power School.
The subsequent nine months will include hands-on training on an operational reactor and simulator, along with continued classroom instruction and small group training.
Upon successful qualification as a nuclear plant supervisor, the Nuclear Operations and Training Engineer will pursue advanced qualifications and technical training while fulfilling their duties as a nuclear operator and trainer.
Key responsibilities include:
- Analyzing, implementing, monitoring, and overseeing all aspects of technical training, plant operations, and refueling.
- Ensuring the proper daily operations of the plant and support equipment, maintaining equipment, and training naval and civilian personnel on both theoretical and operational aspects of nuclear plant operations.
- Providing on-shift engineering and accident assessment expertise, ensuring safe operations.
- Conducting shutdown and start-up activities and implementing emergency procedures when necessary.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an engineering or science-related field; a Master's degree is also acceptable.
Preferred Skills
- Minimum overall GPA of 3.2/4.0; candidates with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 and extensive relevant experience may be considered.
- Previous naval nuclear power experience.
- Strong academic performance in core engineering subjects.
- Effective communication skills in instructional environments.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities.

The pay range for this position is $61,000 - $93,400 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
