Position Overview - Clinical Pharmacy Specialist

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist will act as a vital resource within the pharmacy department, ensuring excellence in all facets of pharmaceutical care provided to patients. This role encompasses the assessment of pharmacy and institutional policies concerning medication use and the department's preparedness for regulatory evaluations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee formulary management, including the formulation of guidelines and protocols.
  • Provide drug-related education and collaborate with various hospital departments to enhance pharmacy services.
  • Assist in the training and competency assessment of clinical staff and learners.
  • Engage in academic contributions such as authorship, presentations, and participation in national conferences.

Qualifications

Education:
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) is required.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of pharmacy experience in a pediatric, specialized, or clinical environment is necessary. Candidates without a PGY2 residency should have at least six years of experience.

Licenses and Certifications:
Eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the District of Columbia, with potential requirements for Maryland and Virginia. Board Certification in Pharmacy (BPS) is also required.

  • Medication Management: Interpret and verify medication orders, ensuring accuracy in drug selection, dosing, and administration.
  • Clinical Interventions: Monitor drug therapy and document necessary interventions, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient care.
  • Staff Development: Educate and supervise pharmacy students and residents, contributing to their professional growth.
  • Quality Improvement: Lead initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of pharmacy services and reducing medication errors.
