Position Overview - Clinical Pharmacy Specialist

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist will act as a vital representative of the pharmacy department, ensuring excellence in all facets of care provided. This role encompasses the evaluation of pharmacy and institutional policies regarding medication utilization and readiness for regulatory inspections within their specialized field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee formulary management, including the creation of guidelines and protocols.
  • Deliver drug-related education and collaborate with various hospital departments to assess, direct, and enhance pharmacy services.
  • Assist in the training and competency evaluation of clinical staff and learners.
  • Contribute to academic scholarship through authorship, presentations, and participation in national conferences.
  • Facilitate collaborative practice opportunities within the organization.

Qualifications

Education
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) is required.

Experience
A minimum of 2 years of pharmacy experience in a pediatric, specialized, or clinical setting is required. Candidates without a PGY2 residency must have at least 6 years of experience.

Licenses and Certifications
Eligible for Pharmacist Licensure in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (as applicable). Board Certified Pharmacist (BPS) certification is required within one year.

Functional Responsibilities

  • Order Processing and Accreditation Readiness
    Interpret and verify medication orders, oversee medication distribution, and assist in maintaining accreditation readiness.
  • Interventions and Documentation
    Monitor drug therapy, document interventions, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal medication access.
  • Staff Development and Training
    Support the education and supervision of pharmacy students and residents, and develop training programs to reduce errors in practice.
  • Clinical Services
    Ensure appropriate medication use, provide timely drug information, and assist in managing drug shortages.
  • Quality Improvement
    Lead initiatives aimed at cost savings and participate in quality improvement activities within the pharmacy department.

Professional Development
Engage in research initiatives, attend and present at conferences, and contribute to the primary literature through publications.
