Role Summary
The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist will act as a key representative of the pharmacy department, ensuring excellence in all aspects of pharmaceutical care provided. This role encompasses the evaluation of pharmacy and organizational policies related to medication use and the readiness for regulatory inspections within their specialized field.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee formulary management, including the creation of guidelines and protocols.
- Provide drug-related education and collaborate with various hospital departments to assess, direct, and enhance pharmacy services.
- Assist in the training and competency assessment of clinical staff and learners.
- Support the oversight of pharmacy team members within the unit as necessary.
- Engage in academic scholarship, including authorship, presentations, and participation in national conferences.
- Facilitate the development and execution of collaborative practice opportunities.
Qualifications
Education
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) is required.
Experience
Minimum of 2 years of pharmacy experience in a pediatric, specialized, or clinical setting. Candidates without a PGY2 residency must have at least 6 years of experience.
Licenses and Certifications
Eligible for Pharmacist Licensure in the District of Columbia, with possible requirements for Maryland and Virginia. Board Certified Pharmacist (BPS) is also required.
Functional Accountabilities
Order Processing and Accreditation Readiness
- Interpret and verify medication orders, ensuring accuracy in drug selection, dosing, and administration.
- Conduct unit inspections to verify accreditation readiness.
- Review medication lists for potential therapeutic duplications and interactions.
Interventions and Documentation
- Monitor drug therapy and document interventions appropriately.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive medication management.
Staff Development and Training
- Assist in the education and supervision of pharmacy students and residents.
- Develop educational programs aimed at reducing medication errors.
Clinical Services
- Ensure appropriate medication use and provide timely drug information to healthcare professionals.
- Manage drug shortages and represent the department on key committees.
Quality Improvement
- Lead initiatives aimed at enhancing quality and reducing costs within the pharmacy department.
Professional Development
- Engage in research initiatives and contribute to the primary literature through publications.
Organizational Accountabilities
- Demonstrate commitment to customer needs and maintain a collaborative work environment.
- Participate in safety initiatives and promote a culture of safety for patients and staff.
