Our mission is to promote individual wellness and empower low-income and immigrant communities, striving for a more equitable society. As a multi-faceted organization, we aim to enhance lives on a personal level while also driving broader social change through advocacy and community organizing. Our collaborative efforts address homelessness, the lack of affordable housing, and the support of immigrant rights, tackling the root causes of suffering and injustice.

Program Insight:

We operate four shelter sites with a total of 108 beds, including the first LGBTQIA Adult Shelter in the nation. Our facilities are open year-round, and our staff offers direct services along with referrals to additional resources. Our primary goal is to assist participants in breaking the cycle of homelessness.

Position Purpose:

Under the guidance of the Dolores Shelter Program Manager and the Shelter Manager, Shelter Monitors are tasked with overseeing the operations and security of the shelter, as well as supervising guests. Our shelters operate daily, and weekend shifts are a requirement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Meet the physical demands of the role, including staying alert during shifts, lifting up to 30 pounds, navigating stairs and confined spaces, and utilizing standard communication tools.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the shelter environment and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Document and report to management as needed through logs, forms, and communication.
  • Provide emergency shift coverage on short notice when necessary.
  • Complete assigned shifts reliably and attend mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.

Additional Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Conduct all business in alignment with the Mission Action Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment and prioritizing the agency's and community's best interests.
  • Operate within the framework of the agency's mission, vision, values, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, restorative justice, trauma-informed practices, and language justice.
  • Commit to treating every community member with respect and dignity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Strong commitment to social justice issues and familiarity with the agency's mission.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively.
  • Attention to detail and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English, with a preference for fluency.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in MS Word and email.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with low-income, homeless adults or marginalized communities is preferred.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Application Process:

Qualified candidates are encouraged to submit their resume, cover letter, salary expectations, and three professional references. We are conducting interviews on a rolling basis until the position is filled. For more information about our organization, please visit our website.
