This position entails responsible technical work related to engineering planning, construction oversight, and compliance evaluations. Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on the assigned responsibilities, individuals in this position may perform one or more of the following:
- Conduct compliance inspections on significant construction projects to ensure adherence to regulations and standards.
- Review construction plans and specifications for compliance with established guidelines.
- Participate in preconstruction meetings to discuss schedules and address potential issues.
- Draft or modify plans and drawings to ensure they meet contract specifications.
- Inspect materials and equipment delivered to construction sites for compliance with specifications.
- Assess equipment to identify maintenance and repair needs.
- Perform or oversee field tests to ensure proper installations and compliance with standards.
- Monitor work practices to ensure acceptable construction methods are utilized.
- Conduct inspections during and after construction to verify workmanship quality and compliance.
- Address citizen complaints and recommend corrective actions as necessary.
- Maintain comprehensive project logs documenting work activities and conditions.
- Resolve discrepancies between plans and specifications.
- Review contractor requests for payment and change orders, providing recommendations.
- Maintain records and reports documenting inspection activities and progress.
- Collect data using GPS devices for asset management.
- Conduct traffic studies and inspections, addressing complaints and providing reports.
- Order supplies and maintain equipment as needed.
- Communicate policies and information to employees and the public.
- Operate a vehicle for site visits and utilize communication devices for coordination.
- In the absence of a supervisor, oversee the work of others, providing guidance and evaluation.
- Perform related duties as required.
Job Specifications
- Knowledge of construction practices, methods, and safety protocols.
- Familiarity with public works construction procedures.
- Basic understanding of mathematics and engineering principles.
- Proficient with computers and related technology.
- Awareness of regulations governing construction activities.
- Experience with software applications such as AutoCAD and MS Office.
- Ability to interpret construction codes and requirements.
- Competence in using testing instruments.
- Strong record-keeping and reporting skills.
- Effective verbal communication abilities.
- Strong time management skills for handling multiple projects.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in both office and outdoor environments.
- Regularly required to sit and walk.
- Frequently required to reach and stand.
- Must be able to lift or move objects up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision.
Work Category
- Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds frequently.
Minimum Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or GED; AND
- Three (3) years of experience in engineering support; OR
- An equivalent combination of training and experience; AND
- Valid driver's license.
