About the Department:
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is dedicated to safeguarding public health and the environment by ensuring the provision of clean drinking water, managing wastewater treatment, and minimizing pollution from air, noise, and hazardous materials.

Overview:
As the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, DEP employs nearly 6,000 individuals and delivers an impressive 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water daily to over 8.5 million residents in New York City and more than 1 million individuals in Upstate New York. Additionally, we manage the collection and treatment of approximately 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater each day.

Department Responsibilities:
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment oversees the operation and maintenance of all facilities associated with sewage treatment, including wastewater treatment plants, collection facilities, laboratories, harbor vessels, and sludge dewatering facilities.

Position Summary:
Under general supervision, the selected candidate will engage in chemical engineering tasks of moderate complexity and responsibility, both in the office and in the field, while receiving valuable training in engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will participate in a range of dynamic activities related to wastewater treatment processes, compliance, and permitting. Daily responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring compliance with the discharge permits of wastewater treatment plants and timely compilation and distribution of treatment reports;
  • Responding to inquiries regarding treatment processes and generating specialized reports on plant performance;
  • Providing expert consultation on treatment plant issues, laboratory data interpretation, operational techniques, and field laboratory procedures;
  • Conducting research and studies related to the chemical engineering functions of the department;
  • Operating a motor vehicle as required for assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a baccalaureate degree in chemical engineering from an accredited institution and have one year of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering work, or a baccalaureate degree in chemical engineering along with a master's degree in the same field from an accredited institution. Note that a master's degree can substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience.
