Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Roadway Design Engineer to join our team at the State of Nebraska. As a key member of our Roadway Design team, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our state's transportation infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the design of various rural and urban highway construction projects, including resurfacing and reconstruction projects assigned to the Roadway Design Division.
  • Design various roadway features, including horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, cross-sections, earthwork, guardrail, and other features.
  • Participate in the design of erosion control features and implementation of environmental processes, perform hydrologic/hydraulic analysis, and design culverts and storm sewers.
  • Draft roadway, culvert, and storm sewer cross-section plans, as well as miscellaneous design details.
  • Prepare preliminary and final construction project quantities and costs.
  • Participate in and document engineering decisions, write special provisions, and keep project correspondence files accurate and up-to-date.
  • Prepare for and participate in project-related meetings and field inspections.
  • Prepare project-related documents and reports.
  • Coordinate highway design projects within the division and department, including coordination with public service agencies such as cities, counties, and utilities.
  • Aid and assist other engineering personnel as needed and perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Professional Engineer I: Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.
  • Engineer: Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, and FE/EIT certification.
  • Experience and knowledge in the design of roadways, streets, culverts, and storm sewers.
  • Experience and knowledge in the preparation of highway construction plans, construction estimates, highway construction, highway inspection, and highway surveying.
  • Experience in road design, including coordinating projects, making technical engineering computations, and knowledge of modern methods and techniques of highway construction, maintenance, and materials.
  • Experience in MicroStation, Bentley Civil Powered by Open Roads Technology, ProjectWise, and GEOPAK.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic engineering principles related to the design and construction of highway projects.
  • Strong organizational and public relations skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer.
  • Ability to work as part of a small design team.
  • Proficiency in or ability to become proficient in one of the most current versions of at least one of the following design software: MicroStation, AUTOCADD, or other related design CADD software platforms.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point).
  • Familiarity with NDOT's Roadway Design Manual and Standard Specification for Highway Construction.
  • Familiarity with ProjectWise and OnBase or other file storage platforms.
