Overview of the Unit
This specialized unit consists of 16 beds dedicated to cardiovascular and cardiothoracic patient care. The primary focus is on the recovery of patients following open-heart surgery and CABG procedures. Patients typically spend 2-3 days in the ICU post-operation. The unit caters to a diverse patient population, including those requiring intensive care after cardiac procedures, open-heart surgeries, vascular and thoracic surgeries, TAVR procedures, and STEMI interventions. Registered Nurses (RNs) will be responsible for managing patients who need ventilator support, SWAN-GANZ catheters, vasopressors, inotropic drips, high-alert medications, intra-aortic balloon pumps, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), IMPELLA devices, and chest tubes. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2 for standard ICU patients, with a high acuity ratio of 1:1; however, there may be instances requiring a 1:3 ratio based on staffing and unit acuity.

Responsibilities
The RN will utilize the ANA scope of practice and the nursing process framework to deliver professional nursing care, emphasizing patient-family centered care principles. Responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and facilitating patient discharge. The RN will provide high-quality care under the guidance of the Nurse Leader, adhering to Corewell Health policies and procedures, while recognizing the significance of nursing care and patient/family collaboration on health outcomes. The RN will engage with patients and families to incorporate their input and goals into the care plan and will develop educational strategies for patients and families, documenting this education appropriately in the health record.

Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in Nursing is required.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is required within five years of hire.
- Graduates from non-accredited nursing programs must have at least one year of acute care experience or two years in a licensed healthcare role and must have successfully passed the NCLEX licensure examination.
- Current Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license is required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited organization is required upon hire.
- AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required within six months.
- Specialty certification is highly recommended within two years.
- One year of ICU experience as an RN is preferred.
- Direct inpatient care experience is required.
Work Schedule
This position is full-time, with a day shift schedule. Weekly hours are 36, with work hours typically from 3:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workdays may vary, and weekend shifts are required every other weekend.
