Overview of the Unit
This specialized unit comprises 16 beds dedicated to cardiovascular and cardiothoracic patient care. The primary focus is on patients recovering from open-heart surgeries and CABG procedures. Typically, post-operative CABG patients will spend 2-3 days in the ICU. The patient demographic includes those requiring intensive care following cardiac procedures, open-heart surgeries directly from the operating room, vascular and thoracic surgeries, TAVR procedures, and interventions for STEMI cases. Registered Nurses (RNs) in this unit will manage patients needing ventilatory support, SWAN-GANZ catheters, vasopressors, inotropic infusions, high-alert medications, intra-aortic balloon pumps, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), IMPELLA devices, and chest drainage systems. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2 for standard ICU patients, with a high acuity ratio of 1:1; there may be instances requiring a 1:3 ratio based on staffing and unit acuity.

Responsibilities
The RN, adhering to the ANA scope of practice, employs the nursing process framework to deliver professional nursing care. This involves integrating patient and family-centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and facilitate discharge. The RN ensures quality patient care under the guidance of the Nurse Leader, following established policies and procedures, while recognizing the significance of nursing interventions and collaborative partnerships with patients and families on health outcomes. The RN actively engages with patients and families to incorporate their insights and objectives into the care plan, developing educational strategies and documenting learning in the health record.

Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in Nursing is required.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is required within five years of hire.
- Candidates from non-accredited nursing programs must possess at least one year of acute care experience or two years in a licensed healthcare role, along with successful completion of the NCLEX exam.
- Current Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license is mandatory.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited organization is required upon hire.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required within six months of hire.
- Specialty certification is highly recommended within two years.
- One year of ICU experience as an RN is preferred.
- Direct inpatient care experience is essential.
Employment Details
This position is full-time, with a day shift schedule. Weekly hours are typically 36, with variable days worked and every other weekend commitment.
