Overview of the Unit

This specialized unit comprises 16 beds dedicated to cardiovascular and cardiothoracic patient care. The primary focus is on patients recovering from open-heart surgeries and CABG procedures. Typically, post-operative CABG patients will spend 2-3 days in the ICU. The patient demographic includes those requiring intensive care following cardiac procedures, open-heart surgeries directly from the operating room, vascular and thoracic surgeries, TAVR procedures, and STEMI interventions. Registered Nurses (RNs) will be responsible for patients needing ventilator support, SWAN-GANZ catheters, vasopressors, inotropic drips, high-alert infusions, intra-aortic balloon pumps, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), IMPELLA devices, and chest tubes. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2 for standard ICU patients, and 1:1 for high-acuity cases; there may be instances requiring a 1:3 ratio based on staffing and unit acuity.

Responsibilities

The RN, adhering to the ANA scope of practice, employs the nursing process framework to deliver professional nursing care. This includes integrating patient-family centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and facilitate discharge. The RN is tasked with providing high-quality patient care under the guidance of the Nurse Leader, in accordance with Corewell Health policies and procedures, while recognizing the significance of nursing care and patient/family collaboration on health outcomes. The RN collaborates with patients and families to incorporate their input and objectives into the care plan and develops educational strategies for patients and families, documenting this education appropriately in the health record.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Nursing is required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is required within five years.
  • Graduates from non-accredited nursing programs must have at least one year of acute care experience or two years in a licensed healthcare role, and must have successfully passed the NCLEX licensure examination.
  • Current Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved organization is required upon hire.
  • AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required within six months.
  • Specialty certification is highly recommended within two years.
  • One year of experience as an RN in an ICU setting is preferred.
  • Direct inpatient care experience is required.
