Overview of the Unit
This specialized unit consists of 16 beds dedicated to cardiovascular and cardiothoracic patient care. The primary focus is on patients recovering from open-heart surgeries and CABG procedures. Patients typically spend 2-3 days in the ICU post-operation. The unit caters to a diverse patient population requiring intensive care, including those recovering from cardiac procedures, vascular surgeries, thoracic surgeries, TAVR interventions, and STEMI treatments. Registered Nurses (RNs) in this unit will manage patients needing advanced support such as ventilators, SWAN-GANZ catheters, vasopressors, inotropic drips, high-alert medications, intra-aortic balloon pumps, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), IMPELLA devices, and chest tubes. The nurse-to-patient ratio is generally 1:2 for standard ICU patients, with a high acuity ratio of 1:1; however, there may be instances requiring a 1:3 ratio based on staffing and unit acuity.

Role Responsibilities
The RN, adhering to the ANA scope of practice, employs the nursing process framework to deliver professional nursing care. This involves integrating patient-family centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and facilitate discharge processes. The RN is responsible for providing high-quality patient care under the guidance of the Nurse Leader, following Corewell Health policies and procedures, while acknowledging the significant impact of nursing care and patient/family collaboration on health outcomes. The RN collaborates with patients and families to incorporate their input and goals into the care plan and develops educational strategies tailored to their needs, ensuring proper documentation of education in the health record.

Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in Nursing required.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required within five years.
- Graduates from non-accredited nursing programs must have a minimum of one year of acute care experience or two years in a licensed healthcare role, along with successful completion of the NCLEX exam.
- Current Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved organization required upon hire.
- AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required within six months.
- Specialty certification is highly recommended within two years.
- Preferred: One year of RN experience in an ICU setting.
- Direct inpatient care experience is required.
