Position Summary
The Aerospace Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) is a multifaceted scientific entity that supports a diverse research and development framework for an expanding space industry. PSL's influence is amplified through a varied research portfolio that integrates foundational scientific inquiry with advanced technology development, catering to a wide customer spectrum. Our unique capacity to collaborate with all stakeholders—government, industry, and academia—enables us to devise innovative solutions for the most pressing challenges in current and future technological applications.
Role Overview
As a Space Photovoltaics Engineering Scientist, you will spearhead initiatives aimed at developing methodologies, tools, and prototypes for assessing next-generation spacecraft solar cell and solar array technologies. Your collaboration with industry partners and program offices will be crucial in ensuring the success of significant space missions by evaluating the relevant characteristics of various solar array components and their degradation in space environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute experiments that directly influence the advancement of space photovoltaic and solar array technologies.
- Utilize a combination of engineering skills and scientific methods to lead the development of industry-leading capabilities for characterizing advanced space photovoltaic technologies.
- Leverage your extensive technical experience to enhance test and measurement capabilities for photovoltaic device characterization.
- Contribute to data management and the development of software analysis and modeling tools.
- Effectively communicate technical findings and provide expert consultation to stakeholders and the broader scientific community through presentations and publications.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements for the Senior Member of the Technical Staff include:
- Master's degree in a STEM field or equivalent.
- 5 years of experience in photovoltaics devices and materials research or device physics characterization.
- Familiarity with techniques such as quantum efficiency measurements, four-point probe IV measurements, and electroluminescence spectroscopy.
- Experience with instruments like solar simulators and vacuum chamber systems.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Python or MATLAB.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
For the Research Scientist role, the following are required:
- Ph.D. in a STEM field or equivalent.
- 8+ years of experience in photovoltaics materials research or device physics characterization.
- Experience in managing research projects and leading teams of scientists or engineers.
Preferred Qualifications
It would be advantageous to have:
- Experience with radiation and space environmental effects on photovoltaic materials.
- Development of advanced characterization techniques for energy generation systems.
- Hands-on experience in solar array or solar cell manufacturing.
