Position Summary

The Aerospace Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) is a multifaceted scientific entity dedicated to pioneering research and development for an expanding space industry. PSL's influence is amplified through a diverse research portfolio that merges foundational scientific inquiry with state-of-the-art technology advancement, catering to a wide array of clients. Our unique capability to collaborate with all stakeholders—government, industry, and academia—enables us to devise inventive solutions for the most pressing challenges in contemporary and future technology applications.

The Energy Technology Department (ETD) within PSL offers specialized technical support for space solar cell and solar array technologies utilized across various spacecraft. We lead the field by conducting both fundamental and applied research to characterize photovoltaic devices and investigate their degradation in the space environment. Our advanced characterization techniques and commitment to precision provide our national security and civil/commercial space clients with dependable data to forecast the performance and degradation of their solar arrays in the extreme conditions of space.

Role Responsibilities

As a Space Photovoltaics Engineering Scientist, you will spearhead initiatives to create methodologies, tools, and prototypes for evaluating and analyzing next-generation spacecraft solar cell and solar array technologies for national security space programs. You will collaborate with industry partners and program offices to ensure the successful execution of critical space missions by assessing and comprehending the pertinent characteristics of various solar array components and their degradation in the relevant space environments.

Key Duties Include:

  • Designing and executing experiments that directly influence the future trajectory of space photovoltaic and solar array technologies.
  • Integrating hands-on engineering skills with scientific methodologies to lead the development of industry-leading capabilities for characterizing advanced space photovoltaic and energy generation technologies.
  • Utilizing your extensive technical expertise to enhance test and measurement capabilities for photovoltaic device characterization.
  • Contributing to data management, software analysis, and modeling tools.
  • Effectively communicating technical results and providing expert consultation to stakeholders and the broader scientific community through presentations and publications.

Qualifications for Success

Minimum requirements for the Senior Member of the Technical Staff (Physics & Microelectronics/ Semiconductor Engineering) include:

  • A Master's degree in a STEM field or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in photovoltaics devices and materials research or device physics characterization.
  • Proficiency in two or more of the following photovoltaic characterization techniques: quantum efficiency measurements, four-point probe IV measurements, electroluminescence spectroscopy/imaging, DLTS, capacitance techniques, scanning defect mapping, reflectance spectroscopy.
  • Experience with two or more of the following instruments: solar simulators, Keithley source meter, lock-in amplifier, spectroradiometer, vacuum chamber systems, thermal cyclers.
  • Demonstrated experience using common data analysis tools such as Python, MATLAB, or Origin.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to support customer needs or professional conferences, approximately 10% as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.

In addition, the minimum requirements for the Research Scientist (Physics & Microelectronics/ Semiconductor Engineering) include:

  • A Ph.D. in a STEM field or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of experience in photovoltaics materials research or device physics characterization or modeling.
  • Experience in designing and executing experiments, including building new tools or modifying existing ones to better understand electro-optical or microelectronics devices.
  • Experience in managing research projects and collaborating with or leading teams of junior scientists/engineers.

Preferred Qualifications

It would be advantageous if you possess:

  • Experience investigating radiation and space environmental effects on photovoltaic materials.
  • Development of advanced characterization techniques that enhance understanding of energy generation systems.
  • Experience in developing laboratory test capabilities through hardware/software integration.
  • Experience with common database tools and on-orbit telemetry analysis.
  • Hands-on experience in solar array or solar cell manufacturing.
