Position Summary
The Aerospace Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) is a multifaceted scientific entity that provides a comprehensive and innovative research and development framework for an expanding space sector. PSL's influence is amplified through a diverse research portfolio that merges foundational scientific inquiry with state-of-the-art technology advancement, catering to a wide array of clients. Our unique capability to collaborate with all stakeholders—government, industry, and academia—enables us to devise novel solutions for the most pressing challenges in current and future technological applications.
The Energy Technology Department (ETD) within PSL offers specialized technical support for space solar cell and solar array technologies utilized across various spacecraft. We lead the field by conducting fundamental and applied research to characterize photovoltaic devices and analyze their degradation in the space environment. Our advanced characterization techniques and commitment to precision and accuracy provide our national security and civil and commercial space clients with reliable data to forecast the performance and deterioration of their solar arrays in the extreme conditions of space.
Key Responsibilities
As a Space Photovoltaics Engineering Scientist, you will spearhead initiatives to develop methodologies, tools, capabilities, and prototypes for evaluating and assessing next-generation spacecraft solar cell and solar array technologies for national security space programs. Your role will involve collaboration with industry partners and program offices to ensure the success of critical space missions by evaluating and understanding the relevant properties of various solar array components and their degradation in the applicable space environment.
What You Will Do
- Design and execute experiments that directly influence the future trajectory of space photovoltaic and solar array technologies for space missions.
- Utilize hands-on engineering skills and a scientific approach to lead the design and development of industry-leading capabilities for characterizing advanced space photovoltaic and other energy generation technologies.
- Apply your extensive technical expertise to support the development of testing and measurement capabilities for photovoltaic device characterization.
- Contribute to data management, software analysis, and modeling tools.
- Effectively communicate technical findings and provide consultation to stakeholders and the broader scientific community through presentations and publications.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements for the Senior Member of the Technical Staff include:
- Master's degree in a STEM field or equivalent.
- 5 years of experience in photovoltaics devices and materials research or device physics characterization.
- Proficiency in two or more photovoltaic characterization techniques such as quantum efficiency measurements, four-point probe IV measurements, and electroluminescence spectroscopy/imaging.
- Experience with relevant instruments including solar simulators, Keithley source meters, and vacuum chamber systems.
- Demonstrated experience with data analysis tools such as Python, MATLAB, or Origin.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to support customer needs or professional conferences.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.
For the Research Scientist role, the minimum requirements include:
- Ph.D. in a STEM field or equivalent.
- 8+ years of experience in photovoltaics materials research or device physics characterization or modeling.
- Experience in designing and executing experiments by developing new tools or modifying existing ones.
- Proven ability to manage research projects and collaborate with or lead teams of junior scientists/engineers.
Preferred Qualifications
It would be advantageous if you possess:
- Experience investigating radiation and space environmental effects on photovoltaic materials.
- Development of advanced characterization techniques for energy generation systems.
- Experience with laboratory test capabilities through hardware/software integration.
- Experience with common database tools and on-orbit telemetry analysis.
- Hands-on experience in solar array or solar cell manufacturing.
