Position Overview

This role within the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) division is pivotal in spearheading the creation of cutting-edge manufacturing lines, encompassing both equipment and procedural innovations. This collaborative position is integral to the Battery Engineering team, working alongside fellow leaders, engineers, and technicians to position Proterra as a leader in battery-based energy storage manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and cultivate a team dedicated to validating emerging technology concepts and establishing standards for mechanical and control architectures in future production lines.
  • Oversee the design, construction, and testing of new electromechanical and static fixtures.
  • Collaborate on the development of a manufacturing technology roadmap with co-managers and team leaders.
  • Innovate, design, and test new technologies and equipment to enhance Proterra's battery production capabilities.
  • Conduct experiments and research to validate new technologies and processes.
  • Engage cross-functionally with internal and external teams to ensure successful equipment development and launch.
  • Serve as a technical authority in the development of new technologies.
  • Specify equipment and devise processes aligned with product design specifications and tolerances.
  • Formulate equipment calibration and validation strategies for both prototype and production machinery.
  • Assist the AME team with factory validations, installations, and launches.
  • Coordinate with launch teams to ensure process readiness and production initiation.

  • The Advanced Manufacturing Engineering group is committed to pioneering innovative manufacturing processes and automation solutions, establishing Proterra as a global leader in battery pack production.
  • You will report to the VP of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering within the AME Organization and collaborate with team members at our R&D headquarters and manufacturing facilities.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering or equipment development.
  • 2+ years of experience in developing and managing cross-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Expertise in hands-on equipment design, including architecture, CAD, and software/controls integration.
  • Proficient in CAD development, GD&T, and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with pneumatics, PLCs, lasers, gantries, robots, sensors, and other automation technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across various teams and functions.
  • Experience in vendor management for part fabrication and design evaluations.
  • Proven track record in managing projects with metrics for cost, safety, performance, and timelines.
  • Experience in providing Design for Manufacturing (DFM) for new hardware.
  • Ability to foster relationships with cross-functional teams, ensuring effective communication and problem resolution.
  • Demonstrated capability to keep projects on schedule and ensure timely launches.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in battery manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with Catia software.
  • Programming and PLC experience.

Travel Requirements: 0-20%

Compensation Range: $213,588-$237,320
