Position Overview

Proterra Inc is in search of a skilled Systems Engineering Director specializing in battery technology to oversee our Systems Engineering and Cell Engineering divisions. The ideal candidate will be proactive, collaborative, and eager to thrive in a dynamic environment that promotes professional development. A strong background in systems engineering methodologies, simulation tools, and hands-on laboratory work is essential.

Key Responsibilities - You will:
  • Establish a strategic vision for Systems Engineering at Proterra, encompassing architecture, requirements, data management, and cell engineering.
  • Recruit and lead a Systems Engineering team to effectively address the organization's requirements across architecture, data, and cell engineering sectors.
  • Define, manage, and disseminate requirements for the development of battery systems and associated components.
  • Assist testing and validation teams in verifying and validating system requirements.
  • Contribute to the definition of battery system architecture, diagnostics, and algorithm development.
  • Facilitate the selection, integration, and validation of battery cells into our systems through detailed requirements definition and characterization.
  • Assist in the development of DFMEA, hazard assessments, technical safety concepts, and other safety documentation.
  • Support design leads in translating system requirements into the design of battery systems and components.
  • Oversee the execution of characterization tests, analyze test data, and generate comprehensive test reports.
  • Collaborate with Chief Engineers and Product Managers, along with hardware, software, and validation teams to ensure the effective implementation and validation of new features and components.
  • Provide troubleshooting assistance for battery system issues encountered in testing, field operations, and manufacturing.
  • Support the execution of battery characterization tests, data analysis, and report generation.
  • Offer integration support for battery application projects, including feasibility studies, interface documentation, system simulations, and troubleshooting.

Your Qualifications Include:
  • Over 10 years of engineering experience in the automotive or energy storage sectors, with a preference for experience in electric vehicles.
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, etc.), with an advanced degree preferred.
  • Proficiency in systems engineering practices and requirements management tools.
  • Experience across various engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, controls).
  • Experience in building and mentoring multidisciplinary engineering teams.
