Position Overview

This role within the Test Engineering division will deliver extensive testing engineering assistance to Proterra's Battery Engineering team and Proterra Technology Lab. You will be tasked with the planning, setup, execution, and reporting of thermal reliability, validation, and verification assessments on high voltage battery packs and subsystems.

Key Responsibilities - You will:
  • Conduct thermal characterization, verification, validation, and durability assessments on initial product prototypes.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for thermal reliability testing standards, methodologies, and outcomes.
  • Provide clear and concise documentation regarding tests, including reports on components under evaluation and their current status.
  • Identify and document root causes of failures in detail and collaborate cross-functionally to drive resolution or countermeasures.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and documentation of new electro-mechanical testing fixtures.
  • Develop LabVIEW programs to log data, communicate with test items, and process complex data sets.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with testing equipment and initiate corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with external service providers for the repair, maintenance, and calibration of thermal reliability testing apparatus.
  • Prioritize and complete tasks to adhere to deadlines.
  • Offer design insights to enhance product safety, reliability, and performance when required.
  • Engage with a diverse range of individuals and teams to convey results.
  • Create work instructions and best practices for fellow engineers and technicians to follow.
  • Establish and maintain testing procedures and reports in cloud-based systems such as Jira, Confluence, and Jama.

Your Experience Includes:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • 2+ years of testing experience in the automotive or transportation sectors. Familiarity with high voltage battery systems or powertrains is advantageous.
  • Experience executing tests using environmental chambers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of heat transfer and thermodynamics principles.
  • Proficiency with LabVIEW, data acquisition systems, and digital and analog interfaces for PCs and testing systems.
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Python, MATLAB, C, VBA, etc.
  • Experience in an R&D testing environment.
  • Familiarity with test instrumentation (i.e., temperature, flow, pressure, current, voltage).
  • Experience testing electro-mechanical systems and electronic circuit components.
  • Knowledge of wired communication protocols such as automotive CANbus/J1939, serial RS-232, and Ethernet.
