Brief Overview of Responsibilities:

The University of the District of Columbia is in search of an enthusiastic, student-focused professional with strong collaborative abilities to join the Division of Humanities and Criminology as an Assistant Professor of English.

This role involves instructing a variety of English courses and providing academic guidance to students. This is a full-time, 9-month appointment, with tenure track opportunities available for those holding a doctorate in the field.

Key Responsibilities:

Instructional Duties:

Teach courses in English, including developmental writing. Assist in recruiting new students and support the retention of current students by responding to inquiries in a timely manner.

Engage in scholarly activities and community service. Conduct a minimum of five office hours per week, either virtually or in-person, across a five-day workweek.
Familiarity with instructional technology and platforms such as Blackboard is preferred. Participate in professional development to gain certification for online teaching and course development.
Deliver online synchronous and asynchronous courses, as well as in-person classes during various times, including evenings and weekends.
Engage in college governance and participate in college-wide committees. Adhere to institutional policies and procedures. Contribute to curriculum development and revisions, recommending appropriate instructional materials.

Conduct assessments of student learning outcomes in line with institutional standards.


Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in English or Education with a concentration in English from an accredited institution. A minimum of two years of full-time teaching experience in a post-secondary setting is required, with community college experience preferred. Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and scholarly activity is essential.
Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor must possess an appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a specified timeframe, along with at least three years of full-time teaching experience, including two years in higher education.
For the rank of Associate Professor, candidates must hold an earned doctorate or equivalent credentials, have a record of scholarship and professional growth, and possess at least five years of full-time teaching experience in higher education, including three years as an Assistant Professor.

Additional Information:

This position is part of the collective bargaining unit represented by the National Education Association (NEA), and candidates may be required to pay an agency service fee through payroll deduction.
