Position: Quality Assurance Engineer I (Defect Investigation - Safety Assessment)

Reporting to: Manager, Defect Analysis

Location: Holland, MI.

LG Energy Solution Michigan Inc. (LGESMI) specializes in the development and production of large lithium-ion polymer batteries and systems for electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage solutions. Join a leader in cutting-edge EV battery technology.

Overview:

As a Quality Assurance Engineer I, your role will involve the examination of lithium-ion battery incidents (small, medium/large Cell, ESS) and Battery Management System (BMS) related investigations, including both internal and external failure samples. You will also perform reproduction tests (cell and pack level) under specific conditions. This position is essential for pinpointing the root causes of safety concerns, acting as a central hub to enhance incident resolution, and ensuring the delivery of safe battery products to our clientele.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Streamline and enhance operational processes and procedures.
  • Identify root causes through on-site assessments, investigations, and ignition analysis of safety incidents.
  • Provide guidance and training to operators on the use of analytical equipment.
  • Assist operators in conducting product analysis.
  • Execute reproducibility experiments to validate potential causes of field issues.
  • Conduct detailed tear-down analysis and reporting for Cells/Modules/Packs.
  • Evaluate structural and design safety risks associated with automotive and battery systems.
  • Assess risks and causes through buyback and adjacent cell analysis.
  • Investigate battery failures using precision analytical tools.
  • Facilitate communication between technicians and customer service.
  • Develop instructional and diagnostic documentation.
  • Maintain a clean work environment in accordance with 5S3R Standards:
    1. Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain.
    2. Right Location, Right Quantity, Right Container.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (preferably in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial) or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a Quality Engineering role or reproducibility experiment work within an automotive manufacturing context, including internships or co-op experiences.
Experience:
  • Experience in analyzing fire-related failure components, including diagnostics for EV/PHEV vehicles.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic systems in vehicles.
  • Proficiency in using 3D CT analysis software (non-destructive testing).
  • Experience with charge/discharge system equipment.
Skills:
  • Preferred certifications: Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator (CVFI), Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI).
  • Familiarity with IATF16949 standards.
  • Understanding of Minitab, Six Sigma, and 8D problem-solving methodologies.
  • Strong communication skills: verbal, written, and presentation.
  • Critical thinking and analytical problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team to achieve objectives.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Minitab software.
Mandatory Requirements:

Ability to work while wearing a respirator.
