Position Overview

The Lead Financial Strategist will report directly to the Executive Director (ED) and will be instrumental in enhancing, developing, and overseeing efficient administrative and financial frameworks, which encompass finance, accounting, and human resources functions. This role is pivotal in managing all financial, accounting, and associated reporting activities.

The Lead Financial Strategist will direct all daily finance and accounting operations for a growing budget of $3M, taking functional responsibility for the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, compliance, and grants management. This position ensures that Survivors of Torture, International has the necessary systems and procedures to facilitate effective program execution, operational efficiency, and successful audits and tax submissions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring adherence to relevant GAAP standards and regulatory obligations.
  • Maintain internal controls and safeguards for revenue receipt, cost management, and budgetary compliance.
  • Coordinate all audit processes.
  • Conduct regular financial data analysis and deliver financial reports accurately and promptly; effectively communicate monthly, annual, and ad hoc financial updates, while keeping senior leadership informed of the organization’s financial health.
  • Lead the annual budgeting and planning cycle; review all financial plans against actual outcomes to identify, explain, and address variances as necessary.
  • Assist the ED in engaging the board's audit and finance committees regarding financial operational models and trends.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting; ensure expenditures align with grant and program budgets throughout the funding period; compile financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting, evaluate the financial effectiveness of program operations, and establish financial and administrative systems to support program activities.
  • Coordinate certain Human Resource functions and other administrative tasks.
  • Act as a business partner to the ED on financial, budgeting, and administrative processes—including HR, payroll, and benefits—with a focus on continuous improvement and automation of internal systems.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of five years of professional experience in finance and accounting management, preferably within a non-profit context. They will have a proven track record in developing and implementing analytical frameworks for organizational change management.

The Lead Financial Strategist should have the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, or a related field.
  • Proficient in QBO, MS Excel, MS Word, and various online operational software tools.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP principles and financial reporting standards, along with familiarity with month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in financial data management and analysis, coupled with strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with experience in collaborative work within a diverse and dynamic team environment.
  • Experience in payroll and/or Human Resources management.
  • Solid background in coordinating audit activities and managing financial reporting, budget development, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and investment accounting.
  • Knowledge of grants management, particularly in expense allocation tracking and compliance/reporting for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Technologically adept, with experience in selecting and overseeing software implementations and managing vendor relationships.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills that facilitate strategic data interpretation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey key data effectively, including presentations to senior management and board members.
