EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Instructional aides for diverse classroom settings or specialized programs such as Title I, Resource Specialist Program, and Special Day Class are engaged as necessary and funded within specific program budgets.


POSITION SUMMARY:

Under supervision, to assist a general education or specialized instructor in delivering educational support by performing targeted tutoring as well as non-instructional classroom responsibilities.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform clerical duties including taking attendance, grading assignments, preparing educational materials, organizing files, and entering data for grades or assignments.
  • Support learning activities as directed to enhance motor skills, auditory and visual memory, and language expression.
  • Monitor and document student performance and social interactions in various settings.
  • Receive training in and utilize various educational materials tailored to the learning needs of each student.
  • Supervise students effectively.
  • Set up, operate, and return instructional equipment as needed.
  • Provide tutoring for individual students and small groups.
  • Implement behavior management techniques under the guidance of a teacher, tailored to the unique needs of each student.
  • Assist in organizing and distributing information related to Student Study Team (SST) meetings and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.
  • Support substitute teachers by sharing knowledge of student performance and special requirements.
  • Provide assistance to other educators as students transition into general education classrooms.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students' personal information.
  • Administer basic first aid and health services to students.
  • Offer information to students and/or their guardians about available health services and how to access them.
  • Provide clerical support for health service referrals and outreach for health eligibility.
  • Inform families about medical services available through the school or in the local community.
  • Refer students to medical services covered by health programs.
  • Assist in identifying at-risk students and families and refer them to appropriate agencies for support.
  • Participate in relevant meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Meets No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Highly Qualified Criteria.
  • Within six months of employment, acquire and maintain certifications in First Aid and CPR.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Capable of sitting and standing for extended periods.
  • Proficient in using various office equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records.
  • Meet deadlines and work accurately with attention to detail; interpret and apply rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Collaborate effectively with staff and volunteers, demonstrating sensitivity to students with special needs.
  • Follow established safety procedures and communicate effectively with diverse groups, exhibiting tact and courtesy.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Within six months of employment, acquire and maintain certifications in First Aid and CPR. Candidates must possess an AA degree or 48 college units, or meet district requirements to fulfill NCLB criteria.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
