Healthcare Support Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the RN Pediatric Clinic Manager, the Healthcare Support Specialist will carry out essential patient care tasks to uphold and ensure a high standard of medical services for the Shingle Springs Tribal Health medical patients. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for all medical patients and ensuring that equipment and supplies are clean and functional.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain a safe and clean environment by organizing exam rooms, sanitizing equipment, reporting repair needs, and managing supplies.
- Oversee inventory levels for solutions, supplies, and equipment, while participating in the economical use of resources.
- Process patient charges for services and supplies accurately.
- Facilitate patient flow for a provider to ensure efficient daily operations.
- Prepare exam rooms and escort patients to their designated areas. Conduct brief patient assessments and gather medical histories. Ready patients for examinations by the provider.
- Accurately record height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
- Set up rooms for minor surgical procedures; prepare equipment as requested by the provider; ensure proper consent for procedures is completed and signed prior to commencement.
- Assist with special tests and procedures; prepare patients and provide emotional support as needed.
- Administer intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections in accordance with physician's orders, adhering to all medication administration protocols.
- Conduct EKGs, audiometric tests, spirometry, and laboratory procedures in compliance with applicable standards and clinic policies.
- Perform blood draws accurately, document lab draws in the electronic health record, label specimens, and complete requisitions thoroughly.
- Uphold patient care standards and implement the policies and procedures of the Medical Department.
- Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of safety policies and procedures, including universal precautions and infection control, while utilizing proper body mechanics.
- Communicate any identified issues involving personnel, medical staff, patients, families, and the public to the Clinic Manager.
- Engage in the Quality Improvement Program as directed.
- Adhere to OSHA and all State and Federal regulations.
- Maintain compliance with program hazard communications, safety, and infection control protocols.
- Demonstrate a high level of emotional intelligence and professionalism when interacting with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Perform additional specific duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Completion of a medical assistant program, or the first semester of a nursing program, or a combination of education and experience that meets the necessary skills and competencies.
- Ability to maintain sensitivity and objectivity towards chronic medical and social issues, particularly those affecting the Indian community.
- Possession of a valid California Driver License and eligibility for the Tribe's auto insurance.
- Commitment to abstaining from illegal drugs, prescription drug abuse, or alcohol during work hours, with agreement to undergo drug and alcohol testing.
- Post-offer: CPR/BLS certification, TB test, and annual flu vaccination (during flu season) are required unless a medical or religious accommodation is provided. Hepatitis B Vaccine will be offered at no cost to employees, but it is not mandatory.
NATIVE PREFERENCE
Preference in hiring is granted to the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. When two or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference will apply: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must provide verification of Indian eligibility.
