POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the RN Pediatric Clinic Manager, the Healthcare Support Specialist will engage in essential patient care activities to uphold and ensure a high standard of medical services for the Shingle Springs Tribal Health medical patients. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe and sanitary environment for all medical patients and ensuring that equipment and supplies are in optimal condition.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintain a safe and clean environment by organizing exam rooms, sanitizing equipment, reporting maintenance needs, and managing supplies.
  2. Oversee inventory levels for medical solutions, supplies, and equipment, and contribute to the economical use of resources.
  3. Process patient charges for services and supplies accurately.
  4. Facilitate patient flow for healthcare providers to ensure efficient daily operations.
  5. Prepare exam rooms and escort patients, conducting brief assessments and gathering medical histories. Ready patients for examinations by providers.
  6. Accurately record vital signs including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  7. Set up rooms for minor surgical procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment is prepared as requested by the provider; verify that proper consent forms are completed before procedures.
  8. Assist with specialized tests and procedures, providing emotional support to patients.
  9. Administer injections (intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal) safely and according to physician's orders, adhering to all medication administration protocols.
  10. Conduct EKGs, audiometric tests, spirometry, and laboratory procedures in compliance with relevant standards and clinic policies.
  11. Accurately perform blood draws, document lab draws in the electronic health record, label specimens, and complete requisitions thoroughly.
  12. Uphold patient care standards and implement the policies and procedures of the Medical Department.
  13. Exhibit comprehensive knowledge of safety protocols, including universal precautions and infection control, while employing proper body mechanics.
  14. Communicate any identified issues involving personnel, medical staff, patients, families, and the public to the Clinic Manager.
  15. Engage in the Quality Improvement Program as directed.
  16. Adhere to OSHA and all applicable State and Federal regulations.
  17. Maintain compliance with safety and infection control programs.
  18. Demonstrate a high level of emotional intelligence and professionalism when interacting with patients, families, and colleagues.
  19. Perform additional specific duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High school diploma or GED is required.
  2. Completion of a medical assistant program, or the first semester of a nursing program, or a combination of education and experience that meets the necessary skills and competencies.
  3. Ability to maintain sensitivity and objectivity regarding chronic medical and social issues, particularly those affecting the Indian community.
  4. Possession of a valid California Driver License and eligibility for insurance under the Tribe's auto policy.
  5. Commitment to abstaining from illegal drugs, prescription drug abuse, or alcohol use during work hours. Agreement to undergo drug and/or alcohol testing as required.
  6. Upon job offer: CPR/BLS certification, TB test, and annual flu vaccination (during flu season) are mandatory unless a medical or religious accommodation is requested. Hepatitis B vaccination will be offered at no cost, but is not mandatory.

NATIVE PREFERENCE

Preference in hiring is given to the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. In cases where two or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference applies: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must provide verification of Indian eligibility.
