Position Overview:

Are you a seasoned Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) Engineer looking for a significant role with a prominent institution in scientific and engineering research? The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Research Engineer. This role will involve providing on-site support at a government facility. The Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) Engineer will serve as a subject matter expert, delivering extensive R&M engineering support that encompasses R&M analysis, data analytics, program and home office engineering assistance, establishing standard procedures, and applying best practices.

Moreover, the R&M Engineer will offer expert guidance in product support engineering and logistics engineering domains.

The expert in R&M will utilize classical R&M principles, product support, and logistics engineering methodologies, provide training, and educate others on R&M and support engineering techniques. This includes the use of R&M and support engineering software for analytical purposes and developing software code for data analytics.

The R&M engineer will equip the Air Force with all necessary tools to fulfill the EZP R&M and Product Support Engineering mission.

Responsibilities will also encompass teaching, training, mentoring, and supporting a diverse R&M engineering workforce across AFLCMC, preparing educational materials, and delivering courses on reliability engineering to various group sizes, while providing technical support in R&M engineering to AFLCMC Home and Program Office, and conducting extensive data analytical assessments.


Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in mechanical, electrical, or a related engineering discipline
  • A total of 8 years of combined engineering and R&M experience
  • Familiarity with aviation operation and maintenance data and environments affecting aerospace systems performance
  • Experience in related engineering fields such as weapons systems avionics, flight controls, aircraft subsystems, software development, onboard computer systems, and life cycle cost models
  • Knowledge of reliability theories, principles, practices, statistical methods, and techniques
  • Proficiency in large data analytical analysis and its effective application
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to obtain a security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
While not all candidates may meet every preferred qualification, the ideal applicant will possess many of the following:
  • Master's Degree in an engineering discipline, statistics, or a related field
  • Over 8 years of engineering and R&M experience
  • Proven experience with Air Force or other DoD aviation operation and maintenance data and environments affecting aerospace systems performance
  • Subject Matter Expertise in R&M Engineering in Design, including RAM-C preparation, R&M contract language, creation and verification of system R&M specifications and requirements, R&M trades for balanced solutions, R&M Program Plans, Reliability Availability and Maintainability (RAM) theory, Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Reliability Block Diagrams (RBD), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Reliability Allocation and Prediction generation/modeling, reliability electronic/mechanical component de-rating, and Maintenance Task Analysis.
  • Subject Matter Expertise in R&M Testing, including R&M test plans, Reliability Growth Planning and Tracking, Joint Reliability & Maintainability Evaluation Teams (JRMET), creation of failure definitions and scoring criteria, HALT/HASS testing, and Maintainability Demonstrations (MDEMOs).

Additionally, expertise in R&M Analysis, including maintenance data collection and analysis using REMIS or other AF data sources, Failure Reporting Analysis and Corrective Action (FRACAS) processes, reliability verification plans, identification of reliability degraders, preventive maintenance analysis, Weibull analysis, data analytics, VBA coding in Excel, and large data analysis in database tool suites is preferred.
