Job Overview

Position Summary
The Head of Channel Strategy is a pivotal figure within the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Marketing & Communications division, tasked with formulating strategies, establishing direction, and overseeing all facets of audience comprehension and outreach that shape the approach to digital communication platforms. This role spearheads collaborative efforts across various departments to enhance and engage IFT's audience base.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engages closely with stakeholders at all levels within IFT, playing a leadership role in the Marketing & Communications team to disseminate data and insights while ensuring content alignment across digital platforms and publications.
  • Directs the formulation, coordination, and execution of strategies for all IFT digital Marketing & Communication channels, including the website, social media, podcasts, and email communications.
  • Leads a team dedicated to collaborating with key partners to generate content, while also independently sourcing, creating, and delivering timely and impactful communications to IFT's audiences through various media.
  • Establishes a comprehensive marketing data management program, acting as the central resource for consistent information sharing and data-driven decision-making based on member and customer needs.
  • Aligns marketing insights and performance measurement across channels and content to ensure ongoing evaluation and enhancement based on analytical findings.
  • Holds primary accountability for managing digital channel strategies, collaborating with partners to define content types for specific channels, and establishing guidelines and processes tailored to each platform.
  • Oversees the strategic direction and execution of IFT's organic and paid social media initiatives to elevate awareness, encourage engagement, and strengthen relationships with professionals in food science and innovation.
  • Collaborates effectively with Marketing & Communication team members to educate staff on the strategic use of IFT's channels and the integration of their work.
  • Provides regular performance reports and insights to senior leadership regarding channel effectiveness and return on investment.
  • Develops and enhances existing Marketing & Communication channels to improve audience engagement and operational efficiencies.
  • Implements tools and processes to ensure consistency and best practices across IFT channels and specific groups.
  • Introduces innovative communication strategies by staying informed about new tools and technologies, and collaborating with IT to implement advancements that enhance the overall member experience.
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external partners to create and manage engaging content that resonates with IFT's audience, ensuring optimal placement across channels.
  • Acts as a consultant to Marketing & Communications peers and senior leaders on effective uses of digital channels and content to achieve business objectives.
  • Stays informed about emerging trends in science, technology, and consumer behavior within the food industry.
  • Monitors and assesses both IFT-owned and external channels serving similar audiences.
  • Oversees the scheduling and development of channel engagement surveys, analyzing results to inform planning and engagement strategies.
  • Manages relationships with contractors and vendors, including contract negotiations and performance oversight.
  • Builds strong interdepartmental relationships and leads cross-functional teams to develop channels that attract and retain global members and customers, reflecting IFT's role in the food system.
  • Maintains awareness of industry news and trends, leveraging key marketing and engagement channels accordingly.
  • Ensures compliance with industry regulations and best practices, adhering to organizational processes.
  • Responsible for team management, including hiring, training, onboarding, and performance evaluations.
  • Ensures technical proficiency within the team by coordinating cross-training on critical processes and developing training programs as necessary.
  • Fosters a productive work environment that promotes employee engagement and satisfaction.

Management Duties

  • Supervises a team of 2-3 members focused on audience insights and channel strategy.

Travel Requirements

  • Occasional travel may be required, including the potential for evening, weekend, and overnight commitments.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in communications, with a focus on content and channel strategy, social media management, and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging digital privacy regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in managing integrated channel strategies, including the development and oversight of digital platforms.
  • Professional background in the health, science, or food sectors is highly desirable.
