Overview

The IV Pharmacy Technician II plays a crucial role in the preparation and distribution of intravenous admixture solutions for Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, ensuring that over 80-85% of all IV solutions are accurately prepared under the guidance of a licensed Pharmacist. This position also encompasses responsibilities such as managing inventory, processing orders, and collaborating with other pharmacy staff to ensure efficient drug distribution.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties outline the primary responsibilities associated with this role; additional tasks may be assigned as necessary:

  • Prepare and deliver IV admixtures to designated clinical units under pharmacist supervision.
  • Oversee inventory management within the IV preparation area, including supply ordering.
  • Communicate with the pharmacy buyer regarding special drug and supply requirements.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the IV preparation area and Laminar Flow Hoods, adhering to established hospital protocols.
  • Provide accurate documentation for billing and inventory purposes to the charge technician.
  • Assist the Pharmacy Director in compiling monthly statistics on discarded IVs.
  • Generate and maintain computerized records for IV medication charts used by nursing units.
  • Manage the return of unused medications from clinical units back to stock.
  • Support the training of new staff in IV preparation techniques and inventory management.
  • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and hospital regulations regarding controlled substances.
  • Conduct monthly inventory checks of the narcotic vault.
  • Perform random audits on selected narcotics as directed by supervisory staff.
  • Conduct monthly inspections of the pharmacy for expired medications.
  • Prepare interdepartmental charge reports on a monthly basis and annual inventory reports.
  • Maintain current labeling for all medications within the central pharmacy.
  • Complete necessary invoices in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in mandatory hospital orientations, meetings, and training sessions.
  • Exhibit flexibility in work scheduling to meet patient care needs.

Qualifications

To excel in this position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

Education and Experience

Minimum Required Education: Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years working as a Pharmacy Technician is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

Candidates must be registered with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.
